Something New For The Porsche Panamera?
|   Saturday, July 28, 2012
This September, Paris will host its Auto Show, an automobile exposition that many are eagerly waiting for. And with good reason too. This year's edition will have a lot of goodies to delight us with in the form of production cars, as well as concepts. Found in the latter category, Porsche will unveil an additional Panamera model at Paris a few months from now.

Britain's Autocar managed to get that information from insiders and already renderings have made their way to the Internet.
While only a concept, if the public reacts favorably, the car has every change to be green-lighted for production. According to chairman Matthias Muller this move could blend in perfectly with the company's strategy of expanding its model lineup so that annual sales will reach 200k units 10 years from now.

Even in the best case scenarios, the car will not make it on the market before 2016. Going from concept to production is a long and arduous road. But who knows? Maybe customer reactions will be so grand, the whole process could receive a speed boost. After all, this very concept has been conceived after feedback told Porsche clients wanted a car with more luggage capacity (the 445 liters apparently are not enough) and extra versatility. The new car, which can be safely called the second generation Panamera, will compete with cars like Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake and other recent arrivals.

"It is one proposal we are looking at to increase the reach of the Panamera. From the feedback we're receiving right now, there appears to be sales potential for such a car in certain markets, especially Europe," sources told Autocar. Therefore, we can expect to see an extended roofline, angled tailgate and fold-down rear seats in order to provide the room for additional luggage capacity.

Versatility will also play a significant part in attracting buyers. In any case, it will be more versatile than regular Porsche sports cars. In this regard, it can be expected the new car will take the success registered with the Cayenne SUV and refine it to new heights. Speaking of which, the upcoming Macan mid-size SUV will do the same.

The option of offering the car in a long wheelbase in select markets is also being considered. This way, the car can double as a limousine. It remains to be seen how far things will go, as the car hasn't even been officially presented.

Other details refer to the fact that the underpinnings will be shared with some Bentley models. Bentley boss Wolfgang Dürheimer was the one behind that idea, and everything is part of a master plan for the two companies to work more closely in the coming years. Also, drivetrains will be shared between different brand names. The twin turbo V8 engine recently adopted by Audi and Bentley will go into future Porsche cars, replacing the old naturally aspired 4.8 liter V8.

Lastly, rumors have it Porsche is working on a two door version of the Panamera, with and without a roof, which will use the platform that will replace the one now used in the Bentley GT and GTC.
