Some Unique Facts about the McLaren P1
|   Thursday, November 07, 2013
McLaren has always strived to push forward the boundaries set for street legal vehicles and they seemed to have pushed every limit known to man, with their latest P1 Hybrid hypercar, which is set for launch later this year. McLaren has claimed that they always wanted to build the ultimate street legal hyper car along with the world's most driver friendly vehicle. It seems like they managed to get both these parameters correct with the P1 Hybrid hypercar.

Ferrari's La Ferrari and Porsche's 918 Spyder maybe the game changers in theory but when it comes to practical application, we uncover a dream run on the P1. This vehicle is all carbon fiber mono-cage and this is at the base of the P1. Additional parts include a Snorkel air intake, hard top car roof and elaborate space for electronic systems and battery.

The electronic system on this vehicle is also a cause for rejoice as McLaren has especially looked into infotainment measures of this vehicle. At its stiffest region, 5000 Giga Pascal is in place while a general stiffness of 6000 Mega Pascal is available at all times. Two clam shells keep the chassis and body in tow and is an integral part of its design.

The overall exterior of this vehicle is light enough to be carried with two fingers at the most and this keeps general weight of this vehicle down. Even though McLaren used similar technology and engineering while designing its MP 4 12 C, the P1 is 1.5 kg lighter in terms of body only, Every aspect of this vehicle has been designed keeping in mind its weight characteristics and everything from its interior to drive train have been installed, keeping in mind their general weight properties.

Each of its seats weighs 10.5 kg while they can be manually slid to adjust. An automated adjuster has been avoided as it would have added additional weight. The 3.8 liter turbocharged engine is another positive aspect of this vehicle. McLaren has added a whole new transmission system on this vehicle and this is expected to provide sufficient power to the axle when required.

The electric boost system on this vehicle was initially labeled as KERS (as it's called in Formula One). However, this system was later dubbed as IPAS for Instant Power Assist System as its operating parameters and capabilities are quite different from what it was initially estimated. A single battery on this system weighs 96 kg and hence overall body weight needed to be kept at a minimum.

Best part about this electric motor is its improvement in performance while throttle performance has been increased along with peak power displacement capability. A steering wheel mounted boost button delivers 176 BHP over the course of 20 minutes although this depends on operating temperatures and battery backup. This battery charges using surplus power generated during travelling. This V8 engine works as a decent generator while electric generation is high. Normal ports for charging is also available as standard.
