Smart Fortwo: The Third Generation Will Be Launched In 2014
|   Monday, November 11, 2013
The new Smart Fortwo is in the final phase of road testing. The third generation of this emblematic model will mark a new start for the Smart brand, who recently received more freedom from the parent company, Mercedes-Benz.

Thus, Smart will try to return in force with a new generation of the Fortwo, codenamed C453, a model developed as part of a broader program that provides the launch of a four-door version, ForFour, and a sister model which will be sold as the third generation of the Renault Twingo.

All three models are based on a completely new platform which remains faithful to the old principle used the Smart cars even now: Rear engine, rear wheel drive. The new platform was developed in collaboration with Renault and will allow multiple wheelbases, and in addition will have superior rigidity.

The new Smart Fortwo will give up the silhouette with a single volume in favor of a new profile with two volumes. The most visible modifications will be the more obvious hood and windshield angle. These changes are due to the new Euro NCAP rules for pedestrian protection, rules that cannot be satisfied with the old design Smart.

Regarding the external dimensions, they are similar to the current model. The new Smart will have a length of about 2.7 meters which will still allow excellent maneuverability in urban agglomerations. Height remains close to 1.5 meters, but the width will be 100 mm bigger, which will make the new Smart 1,660 mm wide.
British journalists from Autocar say that changing the width has a lot of positive effects. The new Smart will be more maneuverable and more stable at high speed directional changes. Another change which will be found on the new Smart is an electro-hydraulic steering system which allows a turning radius of 7.5 meters, a whooping 1.2 m less than the current model.

Regarding engines, the new Smart will use a totally new 1.0 liter three-cylinder engine to start. This engine has been developed in collaboration with Renault, and will offer 70 hp in its aspirated version and 85 hp in the turbo version. There will be a future Smart Fortwo Brabus, which will be powered by a 105 hp engine. The Brabus version will be launched in 2015.

To transmit the power to the rear axle, the new Smart will use a manual gearbox with six-speeds or an optional automatic gearbox with double-clutch and seven-speeds manufactured by Getrag.
For the first time since the launch of the 1998 Smart Fortwo, the model will not be offered in a diesel variant. There will be, however, a model with electric propulsion.

While Smart shook hands with Renault in order to create greater economies of scale and share development costs, Smart chief Annette Winkler thinks the character and urban driving focus of the ForTwo is still the same.

"It is a city car, and in this respect it is quite unique. We have successfully built on the strengths of the old model," she stated. "The new ForTwo is more mature in many respects but it still fun to drive."
