Small Car, Big History: MINI celebrates 55 years
|   Tuesday, August 26, 2014
When the first classic Mini produced in Birmingham came on the market on August 18, 1959, none of the people involved at that time would have thought that the revolutionary small car concept will turn into one of the most successful automotive story of the last five and a half decades.

55 years ago, two models were presented to the public for the first time, the only difference being the radiator grille, hub caps and paint: Morris Mini Minor and the Austin Seven.
The concept of designer Alec Issigonis was as simple as it is ingenious: interior space combined with minimum external dimensions, four seats, perfect driving properties, average fuel consumption and a reasonable price. These brilliant ideas had an impact that extended into the XXI century.

Currently, the range comprises a number of models. The MINI series began with the classical MINI Hatch bodywork. After that, the portfolio continued with MINI Clubman, MINI Convertible, MINI Coupe and MINI Roadster, for it to be concluded with the MINI Countryman and MINI Paceman.

In the spring of 2014, when the new MINI was launched on the market, the brand began a new chapter in this success story. A completely new bodywork version be seen starting of 2014: the five-door MINI.

All models share an unmatched elegance, stability in retention value, unrivaled handling, outstanding safety, sportsmanship via unparalleled expressive design and easily recognizable, as well as uncompromising quality at premium level. Combining different qualities, it is as modern today as it was 55 years ago, and the concept is younger than ever.

In the first weekend in August, members of the Mini classic and MINI community came together in Kent to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the most successful and popular British small class car.

International Mini Meeting (IMM) was held for the first time in Germany in 1978 - at that time it was a three-day camping event with a relatively small scale. Popularity rose from one year to another, fans being prepared to travel ever further, until the organizers finally decided to turn it into an international meeting. IMM is held every year in another country, but return to the UK every five years to mark the anniversary of the brand in August.

Thanks to its three brands - BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce - the BMW Group is the world's leading manufacturers of premium automobiles and motorcycles. As a company that operates globally, BMW Group has 29 production and assembly facilities in 14 countries and a sales network in over 140 countries.

In 2013, the BMW Group sold worldwide approximately 1,963,000 cars and 115,215 motorcycles. Gross profit for fiscal year 2013 was 7.91 billion euro, while revenue reached 76.06 billion euro. On 31 December 2013, the BMW Group had a workforce of 110,351 employees.

As always, the BMW Group's success is based on long-term thinking and responsible action.
