Skoda launches the Rapid 1.6 TDI 105PS
|   Saturday, November 17, 2012
Skoda has launched its all new small car, Rapid, in the family segment and this vehicle has been placed right between the Octavia and the Fabia. Skoda has been planning on increasing its vehicle lineup since the past couple of years and the modification on the Rapid was expected since the vehicle was reaching its mid life emergency. Skoda also has plans to launch the next generation model of the Octavia and this vehicle is expected to be launched fall 2013.

However, the Octavia needs to be placed in a higher price bracket, if Skoda wants the Rapid to exist independently in the segment. The Octavia is a very popular car worldwide as compared to the Rapid and in case of a modification; the Octavia will be more popular than the Rapid. The Rapid will be available at a base price of 13,000 Pounds which ranges up to 18,000 Pounds.

However, the Rapid 1.6 TDI 105 PS is expected to do well in the market since it provides the best value for money in this segment. The vehicle is powered by a 1.2 liter petrol engine displacing 74 BHP. A higher end 1.2 liter, turbo charged model produces 85 BHP. The vehicle has a four cylindered engine with a five speed automatic transmission system.

Skoda is always present for value and space regardless of the place the vehicle is launched or manufactured. The Rapid 1.6 TDI does exactly the same. With a 4.48 meter wheel base, the vehicle is longer than its predecessor and as a result interior space has been increased. In fact the interior space has been increased as compared to even the current generation of the Octavia.

Skoda is planning to push up the new generation Octavia further up into the segment and introduce the Rapid in place of the current Octavia. With a perfect notch back in place, the Rapid feels like a sedan and this has increased the practicality of the hatch back by improving the boot space from 550 liters to 1500 liters on removing the rear seats.

The top end model of the Rapid uses a 1.6 liter TDI engine and the grumble is quite loud. The sound produced is more than that produced in other vehicles in the segment. However, this is respectable and acceptable in this class. There is no doubting the practicality of this vehicle and with a top speed of 118 MPH this vehicle is fast enough in its class.

Acceleration from 0 – 60 MPH comes in 10.6 seconds and with an overall fuel consumption of 64.2 MPG, the Rapid 1.6 TDI is quite economical. The Rapid 1.6 TDI is for the people who do not have the passion for driving. There are other driver oriented vehicles in the same class such as the Hyundai i30. However, the base models of these vehicles are available for the top end price of the Rapid. If all the aspects are to be considered, the Skoda Rapid 1.6 TDI is a good buy.
