Skoda Confirms Production Of Dacia Duster Competitor
|   Thursday, March 27, 2014
Martin Winterkorn, CEO of the Volkswagen Group, and Czech Prime Minister, Bohuslav Sobotka, officially announced that the Skoda plant in Kvasiny was chosen as the site of production for a new model.

Although the model was not specified, it is known that it will be a future compact SUV, which will be derived from the VW Taigun, whose name could be Snowman. Seat will also have its own version of this SUV (anticipated by the IBX concept) and it is likely that all these cars will be manufactured in Kvasiny.

The two held a press conference and announced for the journalists present that the plant was chosen by the group's string pullers in order to produce the new model on its lines.

"'Skoda Auto's roots are in the centre of the Czech Republic and thus in one of the oldest industrial centers in Europe with people with skills in crafts and engineering renowned in the whole world. The company's staff with these abilities has decisively contributed to the company's success", stated "Skoda board chairman Winfried Vahland.

The increase production volume will also involve new employment opportunities, while the investment required to start production will amount to several billion crowns.

According to information published by the Czech press, the Kvasiny plant was preferred to the detriment of Seat plant in Spain, primarily due to lower wages.

The Czech from Skoda currently make models like the Superb, Yeti and Roomster at the Kvasiny plant. The plant employs 4,500 people and has a production volume of 150,000 units annually.

The Czech Republic last year produced more than 1 million vehicles in factories owned by the Volkswagen Group, Hyundai and Toyota (where Peugeot and Citroen are also made).

At this time, Skoda Auto has 25,000 employees in the Czech Republic plus 100,000 employees at component suppliers.

In 2013, Skoda sales have decreased compared to 2012 (920,800 units), despite the launch of new models (Octavia and Rapid). Also, the company's profit dropped by 26 percent and the plans for the year 2014 aim to deliver more than 1 million cars. In 2013 they presented 8 new or facelifted models and the goal is to sell 1.5 million cars annually by 2018.

The compact SUV, Skoda Polar or Snowman being the rumored name, was unofficially announced in 2012 as a competitor to the Dacia Duster (despite the fact that it will be smaller than the Romanian model), but also for other urban SUVs such as the Nissan Juke or Opel Mokka.

What is interesting is the fact that the platform up! will be used, as well as small engines displacing 1.0 liter.

The dimensions are 3.85 meters long, 1.72 meters wide and 1.57 meters high.

The weight of the Taigun concept that will underpin the Skoda Polar is 985 kg so that it can reach a top speed of 186 km / h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 9.2 seconds. Average consumption was calculated at 4.5 liters / 100 km.
