Series 2 Active Tourer To Bring BMW New Customers
|   Saturday, August 02, 2014
The BMW 2 Active Tourer, the first van of the German brand, is expected to bring new customers into the family BMW owners, says Frank Niederlaender, head of product management in charge with the "small" ranges of the brand.

According to the BMW official, three of four Series 2 Active Tourer clients are people who have never had a model of the Munich brand.
About 75 percent of clients of the first BMW front-wheel drive are expected to come from rival brands, with the possibility that they may have driven before a Mercedes-Benz B-Class or a Volkswagen Touran, but the new customers are likely to choose a BMW instead of the above models.

Launching a van in the BMW lineup is meant to attract young families Munich brand, as they are expected to choose a MPV class model as they become older. In addition, the premium MPV market is expected to grow over the next decade faster than the premium segment, which is an additional reason for the Germans to make a name for themselves with an MPV.

This is precisely why the Series 2 Active Tourer will also receive a seven-seater version, and a plug-in hybrid version. The German MPV is built on the new front wheel drive UKL platform which will give rise to the future 1 Series and eight other derivatives.

An extensive fine-tuning paired with the new chassis innovations such as a single-joint spring strut front axle will help give the Active Tourer the agility and handling typical of a BMW, according to representatives.

Despite the fact that is the first front wheel drive BMW ever offered, the representatives of the German brand say that the car will be fun to drive and provide comparable sensations to those delivered by a rear wheel drive model, explains Siegfried Mueller, development department manager responsible for the Series 2 Active Tourer. "The Active Tourer offers precisely the driving fun that constitutes the fascination of a BMW."

The level of agility and maneuverability of this model is secured through the front suspension and chassis, developed with Mini Division engineers who have decades of experience in developing front-wheel drive models.

BMW said it achieved lateral acceleration values and drive-through times on par with the high standard of rear wheel drive vehicles during lane change tests. Also, they say that this model can achieve a tour of the famous Nurburgring race track in less than 9 minutes.

When it goes on sale in Europe, in September, it will be offered to customers with three petrol and three diesel engines for the model, with German prices starting at 27,200 euro. The model launches in China in January and in the United States early next year.

The Series 2 measures at 4.34 m (170.9 inches) in length, is 1.56 m (61.4 inches) tall, and 1.80 m (70.9 inches) wide, with a wheelbase of 2.67 m (105.1 inches).
The Series 2 Active Tourer is available with an impressive number of gadgets and gizmos such as parking aids, next-gen telematics functionality, active cruise-control system with stop-and-go capability, plus a head-up display. Full-LED head and taillights and optional.
