Seat SUV Could Be Built At Skoda Factory In Czech Republic
|   Monday, December 23, 2013
SEAT could launch an SUV in the near future, and the Skoda factory in Kvasiny, Czech Republic, could handle production. The news comes from sources within the Volkswagen Group, quoted by Automotive News, noting that the new SUV will be based on the platform of the future Yeti.

The Skoda plant production advantage is linked to the cost production costs at that factory, besides approaching a model with which it shares a platform. The platform itself could be the MQB launched early last year, the modular solution that has the role of simplifying the situation for the VAG engineers and increase profit from each unit manufactured.

Since the Yeti recently received a facelift, the new generation is several years away, which means that the Seat SUV is also equally distant. According to sources within the Volkswagen Group, the model has not yet received approval for production, the marketing team trying to find out if they can sell enough SUVs that deserve the investment, especially in the context of the SEAT brand registering losses, with sales still below the expectations of the Volkswagen Group.

But the situation of the Seat is not so serious, because the brand has managed to increase its sales by 10 percent in Europe in the first 10 months of the year while the market decreased by 3 percent in the same time compared to last year.

According to ACEA, Seat has sold 242,487 units in the first ten months of the year. This increase was due largely to the new Leon model, and the urban car Mii. The latter has a common platform with the Volkswagen Up! and the Skoda Citigo, while the Leon shared the MQB platform with the Audi A3, Skoda Octavia and Volkswagen Golf, as is expected to do and the Spanish brand's SUV.

"SUVs or crossovers are clearly a segment on the move. There is an intuition that SUVs will continue to grow because they offer a combination of functionality and emotion. It [an SUV] would be a great brand fit. But, I need to get convinced that this car makes future business sense and sustainability for the brand. Until I see that fully reached, I'm not going to press the green button for that car." said Juergen Stackmann, Seat President.

R&D Vice President, Matthais Rabe stated that "We strongly believe that an SUV fits perfectly with the DNA of the SEAT brand - but it has to have the right mix of technical development, be fun to drive, with an attractive design, and all at the right price."
If the project is allowed to move forward then it could go on sale early in 2016.

Rabe has also confirmed that the SUV would only be a five-seater, but did admit SEAT was also looking into the possibility of producing a whole SUV family. "We are carefully analyzing all the options we are given, and looking at cars that are both smaller and bigger than this first SUV, but nothing is decided on yet."
