Seat Leon Cupra, The Iberian Hot-Hatch With 280 Hp
|   Sunday, January 12, 2014
Even though we are just around the corner from the Detroit Auto Show, an event that SEAT will not take part in, the Spanish compnay decided to reveal two important models for the evolution of the company: the new Leon Cupra and Leon Cupra 280. These are sports extensions of the compact model, and a big part of the company's resuscitation efforts.

The SEAT range shall be enriched with two sports versions, Cupra and Cupra 280, for both of the current Leon's body styles: with five and three-door (Leon SC).

The new Leon Cupra makes use of the 2.0 TSI turbocharged engine, known to all on other models belonging to the Volkswagen Group. In the case of the Spanish compact, the unit develops 265 horsepower and 350 Nm. Whether we are talking about the Leon or Leon SC, the Cupra version guarantees a sprint from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.9 seconds and 5.8 seconds respectively, when the car is equipped with a DSG transmission with seven speeds. In both cases, the maximum speed is electronically limited to 250 km / h.

The average fuel consumption estimated by the Spanish manufacturer is 6.4 liters / 100 km for the manual gearbox and 6.7 liters for the DSG.
On the exterior, the Leon Cupra and the Leon SC Cupra are equipped with a new aerodynamic kit that includes spoilers with larger air intakes, side skirts, a rear deflector, and 18-inch wheels.

For those who want more power under the hood, Seat offers the Leon Cupra 280, basically a descendant of the old Cupra R. The new performance version is also available in both body styles. The propulsion is provided by the same 2.0 liter engine capable of delivering a torque of 350 Nm, but a total power of 280 horses.

Thanks to that, the Cupra 280 can sprint from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.8 seconds with manual transmission and 5.7 seconds with the DSG automatic ox. Mileage figures remain the same as the Cupra version, and top speed is likewise electronically limited to 250 km / h. Also, there are some minor aesthetic differences, mainly on the spoiler mounted on the tailgate, and the 19-inch wheels.

Seat claims that deliveries of the new Seat Leon Cupra and Cupra 280 will begin in March, as soon as the models will make their public appearance at the Geneva Motor Show.
The Seat Leon debuted for the first time in the automotive market in October 1998. The first sports version appeared only a year later, called Leon 20VT, a name later changed to Cupra. At that time, the car used a Volkswagen engine displacing 1.8 liters, and capable of developing only 179 horsepower.

The second generation Leon went into production in May 2005 and a year later it received the sports Cupra version, equipped with a 2.0 TSI engine borrowed from its brother, the Volkswagen Golf GTI. The unit guarantees 240 horses and 320 Nm of torque. It took three years for Seat to develop the performance derivative, the Cupra R, which deliver 365 horsepower and 350 Nm.
