Seat Cheif: "I have not given up on the idea of an SUV"

Jürgen Stackmann, the new head of SEAT claims that he has not given up the idea of building an SUV. Initially, the model was expected to debut in 2015.

He said that that model is still a part of the Martorell company's plans, once he reached the Iberian brand's management. Stackmann took over the reins of Seat three months ago when he replaced James Muir. The former head of the brand said in November last year that the project was "canceled in principle" during a meeting of the Board.

The Seat IBX Concept was presented at the Geneva Motor Show 2011. The model, presented a mix between the Tribu concept, and the IBE concept, both present at Geneva in 2010. The concept has a hybrid powertrain that boasts an impressive autonomy.

"The IBX was created from the gene pool of our next vehicle generation. This design DNA will have a profound impact on every one of our models. With this urban sports utility vehicle we are proving that with our design, our sporty pedigree and our youthful character, we can also create a vehicle concept that is unique among SUVs" said SEAT's Chief Designer Luc Donckerwolke.

In the urban area, it has zero CO2 emissions for the first 45 kilometers, then it switches to TDI engines, or TSI, of the Seat range will intervene to charge the batteries of the hybrid system and to engage the front wheels. Optionally, Seat customers could opt for all-wheel drive system.

At 4.26 meters in length the IBX is relatively compact, but it makes it up with the width of 1.80 meters and height of 1.62 meters to give it more imposing proportions. The IBX possesses the full strengths of an SUV, thanks to its 2 doors, stretched roofline and distinctive rear roof pillar, but it's the ideal crossover between an SUV and a classic sports coupe.
At the same time the side view of the IBX underlines its stature. The defined shoulder, and the powerful, 3D flanks and sharply differentiated surfaces point out the dynamic look, alongside the large wheels featuring an aerodynamic five twin-spoke design.

The length of the stretched roofline is further emphasized by the narrow, horizontal glass surfaces along the sides and the rear spoiler, which together with the trapezoidal roof pillar create an impression of exceptional solidity. The exterior mirror is mounted on the door, just like on a sports car. Precision is also seen in the slender, recessed door openers.

"With the IBX, we are once again demonstrating just how intensively we are working on the renewal of the SEAT brand, and how determined we are to develop for the future. The IBX represents the values of the SEAT brand perfectly – with its unique design, its youthful energy and its outstanding sustainability as a result of its hybrid drive concept. Even though a decision has yet to be taken, we could certainly envisage the IBX as a future expansion of our product portfolio" stated James Muir, former president of SEAT.
