Scary Commercials Where Two-Heads Are One: Really Cars.Com, Get Real
|   Monday, December 03, 2012
There are really times when you wonder if the automotive world, or parts of it, anyway, has lots its collective mind.

That said, the reason it was said comes from a set of commercials being run right now by "Cars.Com." The commercials, one featuring an African-American buyer and the other a woman, show the ostensibly "normal" buyers talking with a salesperson only – wait, it's coming – to be interrupted by a second version of the person singing from the buyer's hair.

So, there you have it three "people" for the price of two. The explanation of the second person is that "it's my confidence" and "it has been doing that since I did some comparison shopping on Cars.com"

How would you feel, if you were a dealership employee, walking up to a potential customer, only to have a second version of the person of the person appear out of either their hair and shoulder (African-American gent) singing at you: "Hey Mr. Dealerman I know what I want I want that one, pointing to a model on the floor." Then, he second effigy begins "Hey Mr. Dealerman, I know what I want, I want the keys to that one!"'

Meantime, the customer explains, with a sheepish look on his face that "that's my confidence. It's being doing that since I looked at Cars.com and compared mileage," says the customer to the more than incredulous salesperson, who says, "let's get the key."

Then there's the young woman with the hair and right in the middle of the hair is a second head, singing the same refrain: "Hey Mr. Dealerman, I know what I want, I want that one…yeah, I want that one!" This time Ms. Two-Heads is looking over at a model on the floor (which we never see). By the way, she tells the salesperson that she "wants that one."

Clearly embarrassed, Ms. Two-Heads tells the salesperson "that's my confidence. It's just been coming out since I checked out Cars.Com."

Come on guys…really – guys with heads hanging off of swing-arms coming out of shoulders and women with second heads appearing in the middle of their hair." Why, you'd think Santa, the Tooth Fairy and Tinkerbell were all going door-to-door with subscriptions to online newsmagazines.

We know and like Cars.Com and we also know where lots of their model copy comes from on each dealership. At one dealership, where we worked for several years before becoming full-time commentators, you know who wrote the Cars.Com copy for each model? It was someone who looked vaguely like us and who also looked like the person that was shaved every morning and who looked back from the mirror.

Now we have the advertising bright boys at Cars.Com trying to pass the copy that appears with each vehicle as somehow mystical, almost holy. Well, unfortunately for them, it's written very much by people like us who have the same migraines or other ills, at times, and who are sad and happy and who have to reflect "happy, happy" all the time for Cars.

If you're going to use Cars as your service you should know a couple of things:

The person writing the copy about the vehicles has about 600 characters for each vehicle
The copy is only one person's opinion
Use the specifications as your guide and leave the written stuff the to the writer.

It's a pretty sad world when we have to resort to the type of third grade mentality advertising to push cars. And, the even sadder truth is that Cars.com doesn't mind it at all. It says something about the industry, doesn't it?
