Saab 9-3 Will Return To Production At The Trollhattan Factory
|   Sunday, December 08, 2013
The Saab 9-3 will be produced again in the plant in Trollhattan, according to Automotive News. The new batch of 9-3 will go into production starting Monday, December 2, 2013, under the leadership of the new owners of the Swedish brand, National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS).

For now, there is no picture of the model that will be produced by NEVS, but sources within the company cited by Automotive News, announces a design almost identical to the 2011 version of the model 9-3, but with a modified architecture.
Practically, those from NEVS were forced to modify the platforms of the 9-3 model, so that they had to replace 20 percent of the components related to the General Motors platforms.

The pre-series version of the 9-3 model shows an identical design with the 2011 generation of the model but has a different logo. The prototype was intended to calibrate the production line and its components. The new logo is a simple circle that bears the symbol of Saab company but does not receive the graphical symbol of the griffin, a characteristic of the previous logo. The explanation is one related to the usage rights of the old logo, which NEVS failed to buy from Scania, the rightful owner.

Those from NEVS will have to use another logo for the models that will be built in addition to the changes already applied to the former Phoenix platform, which belonged to General Motors. The respective architecture could not be used by the new owner of Saab, for reasons relating to the contract signed by General Motors with the former owners of the Swedish brand.

By this contract, the American corporation has done everything possible to protect their intellectual property, in this case the Phoenix platform and its components. For the moment it is not clear which components are in question, but it could be something from the suspension and braking system, to the actual architecture of the bodyshell.

NEVS is a company owned by Hong Kong National Modern Energy Holdings (78 percent owned), and the Chinese city of Qingdao which has a 22 percent stake. The NEVS is headed by an Swedish-Chinese entrepreneur, Kai Johan Jiang. Those from NEVS bought Saab in August 2012 and have been working to put new modes out. In 2014, NEVS even prepares the launch an electric version of the 9-3, which will be sold in the first phase on the Chinese market.

The 9-3 sedan will be powered by a turbocharged gasoline engine and will be built in small numbers for markets in China and Sweden, said Mikael Ostlund, NEVS spokesman .

This move comes almost 2 after Saab filed for bankruptcy at the end of 2011. Saab was previously owned by General Motors after which it was sold to the Dutch group Spyker in 2010.

Since NEVS acquired its assets, new agreements were reached with the 400 suppliers for the 9-3, according to Ostlund.
"We don't want to make promises or forecasts we don't know we can fulfill - we are humble and say we'll start the production volume with low figures and be able to increase over time according to the market's demand."
