Rolls Royce Working on Next Generation Phantom
|   Tuesday, May 27, 2014
Work on the next generation Rolls Royce Phantom has commenced, while experts believe that this vehicle will appear at a showroom near you, in less than three years. Design Chief Giles Taylor and his team are rumored to have started initial sketching, which will await approval, before final renderings are to be revealed to the public. Base architecture is undecided, as of yet, although, we believe this vehicle will be built around an all aluminum platform.

Bosses at BMW, however, are keen to design this vehicle on an i3 like platform, which would introduce the use of a reinforced carbon fiber and aluminum body shell, built on a separate chassis, instead of a single whole unit. No plans have been made for the powerhouse, as of yet, as their current generation V12 engine block is well equipped to handle this job.

A plug in hybrid is almost certain, even though Porsche and Audi are keen on designing all electric variants of their top end models. BMW however, is keen on retaining the well accepted hybrid platform. This decision was aided owing to the nonchalant behavior of Phantom owners, after the introduction of the 2011 102EX Phantom Concept, which was expected to draw in heavier appreciation from potential customers.

Insiders have already hinted at massive exterior modifications, which will give the next generation vehicle a whole new appeal. Even though the current models are not bland or boring by any chance, they have gotten a little monotonous over the years. This is exactly what Rolls Royce is trying to update. The exotic car making company has been working on a path, to modernize its products and the Wraith was the exact result of this vision.

All future vehicles will be based on a similar vision and design principle, which could define the next generation vehicles from Rolls Royce. While discussing the design principles, Giles Taylor made it very obvious that they will not stick to the original, formal design and will experiment with aesthetics, capable of attracting the youth. Rolls Royce is in a position that Bentley and Cadillac were in, till a few years ago, post which, their decision to modernize and attract younger buyers paid off well for both firms.

Rolls Royce was never actually keen on attracting younger buyers, by sacrificing their original culture. They still have no plans of doing the same. Insiders believe that the current generation Phantom is not a stiff vehicle to drive. It is laden with the best of both luxury and performance, although most users fail to grasp the performance aspect.

The next generation Phantom will be featured enhanced air inlets, head light cluster and front grille design, while use of aluminum surely puts their flagship product on a diet. However, meeting the demand for carbon fiber, to manufacture 1000 units per year, could take a heavy toll on the firm, although, we are not quite sure how Rolls Royce or parent firm BMW, plans to tackle this situation. Stay tuned for more on this topic!
