Rolls-Royce Phantom's Proud History At Concorso d'Eleganza
|   Sunday, June 21, 2015
The current Rolls-Royce Phantom is not the only one that held that name having ties with the classical models bearing the same name that appeared in the mid 20s of the last century. In the Villa d'Este contest elegance a few classic Phantom generations were present.
Rolls-Royce Phantom I appeared in 1925 and was designed as a replacement for the original Silver Ghost. Thus, the Phantom I has a huge 6 cylinder powerplant, described by the British as having "enough power" without specifying the exact number.
Even if it is a magnificent model, several copies had problems with corrosion of the aluminum cylinder head, which had been installed since 1928.
Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental is a so-called Drophead Coupe produced in 1933 with a shorter wheelbase and stiffer suspension versus the conventional models like the Phantom II. The engine is similar to the Phantom I, but has been improved substantially, receiving a new cylinder head. The chassis was designed and produced by those from Rolls-Royce, while all bodyworks were created on order from specialists like Barker, who created the body of the copy in question. Only 281 Phantom II Continental copies were produced.
The Phantom III's production started in 1936. Under the hood is the first V12 engine for Rolls-Royce cars and the Phantom III was the only model equipped with a V12 until 1998, when the Silver Seraph appeared. Only 710 copies Rolls-Royce Phantom III were produced; the last copy was produced in 1941, but delivered to the customer only in 1947 because of the world war.
The Phantom IV is the most exclusive Rolls-Royce model ever created. It was produced in the years 1950-1956 seeing just 18 copies, 17 of which designed specifically for the requirements of royals or leaders of other countries. One of these copies, the one from 1954, with the emblem on the roof and the luxurious cushions on the inside indicate its royal affiliation being produced for Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon. With 7 seats on board, the driver's seat has been adapted to be adjustable in the event that Princess Margaret wanted to drive alone. Under the hood is an 8-cylinder powerplant.
In the 60s Rolls-Royce introduced the new Phantom V, which, due to its huge length, allowed manufacturers to design stylish body silhouettes like the Touring Limousine from James Young in 1962. Under the hood lies a new V8 unit, which develops 200 hp and is connected to an automatic transmission with 4 speeds.
The last of the classic models in the Phantom series, the Phantom VI, was produced during the years 1968-1990. The bodywork was created by Mulliner Park Ward, largely as an ultra-exclusive limousine. Being based mostly on its predecessor, the Phantom VI had the same chassis and V8 engine. The Rolls-Royce Phantom VI was used as a royal car until 2002 by Queen Elizabeth II. Only 374 Phantom VI copies were produced over the years.
Of course, the current Phantom couldn't be missing from the lineup, which was introduced in the Phantom Limelight Collection version. To be as exclusive as its predecessors, this Phantom Limelight Collection will see only 25 units produced.
