Reviewing the Seat Cupra Leon R
|   Sunday, February 16, 2014
The current generation Seat Leon Cupra R is neither pretty nor sophisticated. We cannot say the same thing about the next generation vehicle though. Seat has worked hard on all parameters, including performance, comfort, luxury, refinement etc, to match up to the Volkswagen Golf GTI and the Scirocco R. On the top side, this vehicle is cheap and easy to maintain. Hence, it looks like we have a clear winner in every category.

The latest Leon Cupra R is different on all aspects, including its all wheel drive train, which is to be showcased at Geneva in March.
Seat will offer a three door variant of their Cupra Leon R now, which draws power from a 2.0 liter turbo charged petrol engine. Even though their five door variant shares the same engine, it will displace 276 BHP, which makes it the most powerful series production engine so far.

Both variants are capable of accelerating from 0 – 60 MPH within seconds, which is quite impressive once you consider other market rivals. Front wheel drive options will be available soon after this vehicle hits the road. Seat designs every Cupra with a front wheel drive mechanical differential, providing added torsion support, it fully operational adjustable dampers are also class leading stuff, while their six speed DSG transmission system is available in both manual and automated variants.

This vehicle is also wider than before, allowing added interior space. Minor exterior modifications have been made which include larger 19 inch sports rims, an aerodynamic package and flared nostrils, which lend a wider stance to this vehicle. Interior trim is decent, even though it does need a substantial amount of improvement. When compared to a premium segment hatch back, such as Volkswagen's Golf, the Cupra does not live up to our expectations.

Proper bucket seats are available, which provide comfort for long drives. However, Seat will be offering this post summer. Hence, if you plan on buying a Cupra Leon R before April, you might need to upgrade its interior later on. Weighing just over 1300 kg, this vehicle does not share any of Seat's typical driving characteristics, which makes their current generation vehicle difficult to ride on city roads.

A range of technical additions have been made to its interior, which gives it a high end feel. Larger Bridgestone Potenza tires enhance traction around bends and on straights, inducing confidence into the driver. It feels surprisingly smooth over asphalt, without vibrations or engine noise. This vehicle is also quicker off the line, as compared to its predecessor, which makes it fun to drive when the pedal is floored.

Priced at £25,690, the Seat Cupra Leon R will appeal to the regular commuters. It is fuel efficient and emits lesser Co2, which makes it desirable while saving tax. We are happy with Seat's latest offering and would love to drive it within city limits. Without taking up too much of space within the city, it is perfect for driving in urban traffic conditions, providing ease of parking.
