Reviewing the Porsche Macan Turbo SUV
|   Thursday, February 20, 2014
Porsche has come up with their Macan SUV, a sibling to their Cayenne and plan on carving out a suitable spot for themselves in a market segment, right below premium class SUVs. It is a mini SUV Crossover, which should make it to showrooms by April 2014. We drove the turbo charged version of the Macan and were fairly impressed with handling and general performance parameters. This vehicle measures 4699 x 1923 x 1624 mm (length x breadth x height), which makes it shorter than the Cayenne by 146 x 17 x 76mm.

While Porsche's Cayenne shares its platform with Volkswagen's Touareg, the Macan is based on Audi's Q5 platform. MacPherson strut suspension has been added on to its front and rear ends, giving it added balance and comfort over standard suspension systems. Bold design components highlight its muscular structure and meanness. However, this is a refined machine, mostly known for long hauling capabilities and excursions.

Its multi functional steering column and dampers have been borrowed off their 918 Spyder, which helps it handle like a sedan or sports coupe. Its central console features a touch screen multimedia device, with a high slung set of switches. Even though it looks cluttered, ergonomically it is perfect. A three dial speedometer and tachometer provide information and detail which you might need on a roll.

It draws power from a 3.0 liter petrol engine displacing 335 BHP along with 339 ft lb of torque while the Macan S draws power from a diesel powered 3.0 liter engine displacing 254 BHP along with 427 ft lb of torque. Its twin turbo charged engine is powerful enough for the job and we will bring you an interactive session with that variant soon too.

Driving the Macan is smooth on every edge. It feels complete just off the line, while this feeling remains similar on tight corners as well on straights. Take this vehicle for a spin on the freeway and you will be surprised by the integrity with which it pulls forward. Its V6 engine is very energetic, while its short stroke design revs great from low RPMs. Drive around 6700 RPM and this vehicle will pull up comfortably.

If you consider the Macan to be a freeway friendly vehicle, you will be surprised on taking this vehicle within city limits. It handles very well compared to market competition in its segment and is easy to drive for long hours at a stretch. Porsche is known for refinement and class, coupled with comfort and luxury. The Macan spells out each of these parameters quite clearly and with panache.

Despite weight just over 1925 kg, this vehicle is surprisingly agile. Its engine is mated to a dual clutch seven speed automated transmission system, with equally smooth up and down shifts. Despite its weight, the Macan Turbo is capable of accelerating from 0 – 60 MPH within 4.6 seconds, believe it or not! Porsche claims a top speed of 165 MPH, while official fuel efficiency figures are 31.7 MPG.
