Reviewing the McLaren 650S Spider
|   Tuesday, April 08, 2014
McLaren had unveiled their latest lineup this year and the 650S seemed to make a huge impact initially. We are reviewing the McLaren 650S Spider here and if you are willing to spend £215,250 for a vehicle, this Spider might just be what you are looking for. Everything that McLaren designs needs to be mechanically, technically and aerodynamically perfect, or so our insiders feel.

When the engineers came up with the P1 Hypercar, the world broke out in frenzy.
Similar experiences were not recorded this time, as the 650S is based somewhat on its cousin. We have reviewed McLaren's 650S Coupe before and this vehicle is more magnanimous in terms of sex appeal, with muscularity and sportiness oozing out of every inch of its design. Like the P1, this vehicle also has under body aerodynamic panels that reduce drag coefficient, keeping this vehicle grounded at high speeds.

This vehicle provides a whole different drive experience with its roof down. Engineers claim that this whole convertible system increases overall weight by 40 kg, although major differences in performance were not noted. Acceleration from 0 – 60 MPH is identical on both the Coupe and Spider, while the 650S cover this distance below 3.0 seconds. This vehicle is composed solely out of plastic reinforced carbon fiber parts, along with a tweaked suspension and complete drive train.

The twin turbo charged 3.8 liter V8 engine displacing 641 BHP is mated to a seven speed transmission system, lifted off the Coupe. However, this is unique to McLaren's 650S family only. Since a single carbon fiber component is used to design the Spider, this vehicle is surprisingly stiff and rigid, as compared to other vehicles without a roof.

Driving is sharp and precise and the Spider is surprisingly smooth and balanced for a vehicle with no roof. Convertibles are actually looked down upon by experts due to their low body control and precision, due to a lacking roof. However, McLaren seems to have made some major progress in this field. Front end design changes have been made, similar to McLaren's P1 and this is expected to feature of every new vehicle for the moment.

This vehicle surprisingly, sports greater interior space than a conventional Coupe. Despite a folding roof, boot space is higher than the Coupe body structure, as an additional boot behind its front seats, gives it an edge in terms of space. If you are looking for a convertible that drives like a Sports Coupe, you might want to try out McLaren's new offering.

After driving around in the McLaren 650S Spider, we can only say that this vehicle is impressive in every sense. Be it power delivery, refinement, balance, precision, drive dynamics and speed, the 650S Spider has it all! McLaren promises newer and upgraded vehicles each year and we are waiting patiently for the next big project to be revealed. Post launching the P1, McLaren wanted to come up with something bigger and hence the 650S. We are clearly bowled over with McLaren's latest offering.
