Reviewing the latest Toyota Verso 1.6 D-4D
|   Monday, February 24, 2014
Toyota has revised their Verso, which was face lifted just a year ago. However, this is not just a minor face lift and includes sophisticated BMW sourced multimedia installations. Powered by a 1.6 liter diesel engine, along with an optional 2.0 liter engine, this vehicle is expected to make a huge impact when it is available across mass markets. Following 2013's face lift, Toyota recorded 13 percent increase in the Verso's sales.

This led to its final revision, while Toyota now expects sales figures to grow even more.
They plan on selling a total of 4000 units of this vehicle in 2014, 60 percent of which is expected to be diesel powered. Rise in sales in the family commuter segment, has inspired many major car makers to start working on practical machines. Toyota is doing just that. Hence, major sales improvements are expected soon.

This market segment however faces stiff competition from Vauxhall's Zafira and Peugeot's 5008. The new 1.6 liter D-4D engine installed in this vehicle is better than before. It has immense throttle response in both early and mid ranges. Even though its engine is refined, minor sound levels appear when the accelerator is floored. Toyota recommends a maximum rev of 4000 RPMs, even though this vehicle runs best near the 3000 RPM mark.

The interior is quiet and vibration free, which gives it a refined edge over other competitors. A six speed manual transmission is currently on offer, although it is smooth and does not provide any major difficulties on a roll. The transmission was specifically tweaked by engineers at Toyota, to give it a smooth edge along with better general ergonomics. This engine displaces 199 ft lb of torque, which gives this vehicle a smooth edge just off the line.

CO2 emissions along with fuel economy are much better than its predecessor. Hence, the latest D-4D engine is actually a potent addition to Toyota's official lineup. We expect a similar drive train to replace the aging engine layout in their S Max, although official word is yet to arrive. Driving fast is not this vehicle's strong point, although a person owning a Verso will not look forward to going real fast.

Due to its height, body roll is present in small amounts, although it was present in its predecessor too. You need to drive carefully around corners, although a slew of electronic driver aids have been added to prevent that from occurring. Satellite Navigation has been added, along with a new multimedia system, which is expected to provide better overall performance.

Priced at £19,990, this vehicle is capable of reaching top speeds of 115 MPH, while accelerating from 0 – 60 MPH within 12.7 seconds. Official fuel efficiency is rated at 62.8 MPG, while CO2 emissions are recorded at 119 g/km. Even though this is not the most appealing vehicle in terms of fit and finish, it is cheap to own and run, while doing a perfectly good job. As a result people actually love the Verso.
