Reviewing the Ford Transit on Road
|   Wednesday, February 19, 2014
Ford's Transit sits in a very unique position, as it is one of the largest vans we currently have in the market. It sits right above vehicles such as Transit Connect, Transit Custom and soon to launch Transit Courier. Ford has designed this vehicle keeping in mind commercial vehicles, which has taken a downfall owing to the fall of global economy. Ford says that its new van will take back fallen sales, as it creates a new market segment of its own.

Ford is currently focused on selling its Fiesta and Focus variants, which are designed for commercial transport markets. These vehicles also account for a great chunk of sales at Ford and taking focus away from these machines would result in catastrophic losses across global markets. However, the Transit is slowly gaining ground, even though all variants are powered by similar engines.

We are currently quite impressed with Ford's four cylindered 2.2 liter turbo charged diesel engine, with undisclosed power displacement. However, every engine is mated to six speed manual transmission options, although an automatic is under development as we speak. This vehicle is based on a singular chassis and body frame, which lends rigidity to its design. Minor body roll however can be felt at times, which can be a little unnerving around corners.

The Transit is capable of hauling goods within 2.3 to 3.5 tons, depending on engine capacity. This however is 11 percent more than its predeceasing models. Ford claims that their Transit is the best owner's car till date and as we compare it to market competition, we figure that it has a great potential. Commercial vans are required around the globe and hence competition is high.

Ford however studies each market and its needs precisely before designing and launching a product. We receive appropriate vehicles as a result, which further increases demand. Engineers claim that the latest Transit variants feel like a car on road. We took this vehicle for a spin on road to determine easy of driving. This vehicle shockingly, is quite comfortable behind the wheel.

The cabin is stout and practical, with basic levels of upholstery. Even though it is a budget van, it feels decent, with proper fit and finish. Interior space is high, coupled with additional boot space. Hence, if you plan on transporting people or objects, design your vehicle accordingly. The passenger side seat up front can be removed, which provides additional storage room. Even though driving can be a bit edgy, you never feel discomfort on long drives.

Priced at £30,070, this vehicle provides total ride comfort, even though top speed and accelerating capabilities could not be gauged. The engine displaces a peppy 123 BHP, if you are looking for a decent drive experience while carrying a heavy load this is the vehicle for you. Needless to say, it drives best when loaded, although you feel different while driving empty. Ford is keen on launching budgets vehicles and they have proved their worth once again, with the Transit.
