Reviewing the BMW i8
|   Monday, May 05, 2014
Looking for an environment friendly but luxurious way to cruise around the city? BMW's i8 might just be the right vehicle for you then! Despite its eco friendly nature, with no engine note, this vehicle makes a huge impact in terms of visual aesthetics. If you really want to save the world, BMW claims that the best way to do it is by driving their £100,000 i8.

However, despite popular beliefs, this vehicle is quite responsive on road and track and feels like a Porsche 911 till an extent.
Powered by a three cylindered 1.5 liter engine, lifted off a Mini Cooper, this vehicle displaces 228 BHP, along with 236 ft lb of torque. This engine powers the i8's rear wheels, which is also connected to a 6 speed ZF automated gearbox.

Its front wheels draw power from a 128 BHP displacing electric motor, mated to a two speed automated gearbox. This motor displaces 184 ft lb of torque, which combine together to provide massive performance boost. This dual speed transmission system, allows the i8 to perform till an optimum limit. Smart space saving measures is in place too! The 7.1 kWh lithium ion battery, has been installed where the transmission would have been.

This saves up on space, which as a result have been used to enhance boot capacity. Torque displacement is well balanced, which makes the i8 fun to drive. This vehicle is built on a carbon fiber reinforced plastic monocoque chassis, which is lighter than a conventional aluminum frame. This enhances power to weight ratio and squeezes out additional performance. The i8 looks nothing less than a fully operational supercar.

Its wide body lines, coupled with ground hugging style, makes this vehicle a decent rival to Lamborghini, at least in terms of visual aesthetics. A low roof line, together with an expensive looking front grille, lends an extravagant essence. The interior is well built too and has certain finesse to it. BMW is known for refinement and we expected nothing less from a vehicle of this caliber. The i8 feels like a true bred racecar, although low engine grunt could throw you off the mark at times.

Precise power management is fairly important and the BMW i8 shows us exactly why. This vehicle does not really have a true bred competitor in class, although its price point puts it up against the Porsche 911. However, the i8 fail to come close to Porsche in terms of overall finesse and drive quality, with this vehicle. The i8 does almost everything, but not how you would like it to.

If you do not mind spending £100,000 for a vehicle that is semi interesting to drive, the BMW i8 would be a probable contender. However, with a budget this high, people are expected to shop at super car markets. The i8 is not a part of this market in any way. BMW has put in a lot of effort behind this car. Sadly this is not enough, once you consider its steep price tag.
