Reviewing the 2014 Kia Sportage 2.0 CRDI KX-4 Automatic
|   Tuesday, March 25, 2014
Kia has made quite a few mid life upgrades to their Sportage, which could give this vehicle, an enhanced life span. Kia has tasted considerable success throughout Europe and the UK in general, with their Sportage, which accounted for a quarter of their total sales last year. There is no doubt in our minds about the secrets behind this vehicle's market success. Just look at it once and you will be attracted towards its masculine and proportionate exterior beauty.

Kia has to put in more effort if they plan to survive in this market segment, dominated by Nissan's Qashqai, which is up for a facelift by the way! You may remember our story about the Qashqai outperforming Kia's Sportage (not on refinement, dynamics and build quality though!) on a head to head battle early last year. This year round, Kia seems to have done the needful, which might just put in on top of its class.

The Slovakian based car maker still hasn't done away with cheap plastics on its interior, although considerable improvements have been made in terms of infotainment measure, upholstery, and instrumentation. A new audio system has also been added for greater thump and bass. A Variable Assistance Steering Rack can be found underneath its chassis, along with a thicker windscreen, soft anti roll bars, re-valve dampers, transmission mounting, symmetrical drive shaft and front sub frame.

While the Sportage is better in some dimensions, it does not have all the perks required to be a class topper. Grand changes have been made to incorporate a host of mechanical changes too, such as replacing the 1.7 liter CRDi, with a 2.0 liter CRDi. Even though this engine is not of benchmark setting standards, it is still miles ahead of the 1.7 liter.

Interior specs still disappoint as head and shoulder room is inadequate, even as thigh support is flat. This vehicle is particularly uncomfortable for long journeys, which makes it suitable only for city commuting. Even though trim levels are worth appreciating, there are better vehicles in range. Therefore, if you are looking for a vehicle with decent levels of comfort, you better start looking at rivals.

Even if you want the Sportage for some miraculous reason, go for its top of the line 181 BHP displacing flagship model, solely for performance. Even though it might now be what you expect, you will receive a better torque level than other smaller variants for its price. There is nothing particularly sporty about the Sportage. Certain technical additions have been made, which distributes power to its front and rear wheels at certain speed levels.

Priced at £29,495, you would need a head checkup if you opted for this vehicle. It is not value for money and rivals such as Range Rover Evoque and BMW's X3 are just a few hundred Pounds higher. Kia needs to make substantial improvements in all parameters, if they plan on attracting customers. We surely would not recommend an overpriced cross over vehicle, under any circumstances.
