Reviewing the 2014 Kia Soul 1.6 GDI
|   Monday, March 24, 2014
The 2014 Kia Soul has quite a few surprises lined up for us, primary among which is the fact that it is actually petrol powered. The engine displaces a healthy 130 BHP, while sporting a sub £13,000 price tag. It has the potential to take on all entry level vehicles such as Ford's EcoSport, Vauxhall's Mokka and Peugeot's 2008. Kia also plans on selling a large part of their 2014 Soul petrol via private dealerships, which will make this vehicle easily available as compared to its diesel counterpart.

The 1.6 liter petrol engine powering this vehicle is mated to a six speed manual transmission system. A six speed torque converter has been added to their automated variant as well. Special attention has been laid on weight distribution, which makes it better than its diesel counterpart in more ways than one.

It is striking in various aspects, although performance levels are not worth mentioning. If there was no other super mini in class, the Kia Soul might have been a prospective buy. You should be getting the drift by now! Kia has worked exclusively on its exterior, lending advanced edges to its design and aerodynamics, although most of these design elements have been carried out solely for the purpose of highlighting its exterior.

Attention has been laid on improving the equipment standard, while we would suggest adding a few color options, for enhancing its aesthetic appeal. Peak torque is not sufficient, even at the 5,000 RPM mark, which if crossed produces limited acceleration. Screams emerge out of the bonnet, when pushed beyond a certain realm. Hence, flooring the acceleration is ill advised. Kia promises added fuel efficiency on their petrol variant, but we can promise you unrefined character too!

If you are willing you take your chances with the Soul petrol, feel free to shell out an estimated £12,600. However, satisfaction is not guaranteed, as driving this vehicle is quite a task! We don't actually blame the petrol, or claim that the diesel is better. Both are similar in terms of performance, refinement, build quality, fit and finish.

The vehicle is lightweight, while handling is precise. Acceleration is not pointed, which makes this vehicle feel heavier than it actually is. It tends to grow restless over tough surfaces, while suspension is under damped at times. We would not recommend the Kia Soul 1.6 GDI, unless your budget compels you to. There are no better vehicles below this price tag and full credit goes to Kia, for coming up with a vehicle in such a tight spot.

This however does not change facts that have led us to stay away from this vehicle this long. If you do not mind spending a few extra bucks, there are a lot of super minis that hold potential. Opt for any of these, as there are no specific factors that differentiate between them. At this price point, the buyer doesn't really have much to choose from or bargain for. You have to take what's on offer.
