Renault\'s Twin\'Run Concept Announcing The Future Rear-Wheel Drive Twingo
|   Friday, May 31, 2013
Renault has revealed on the occasion of the 71th edition of the Grand Prix of Monaco the concept dubbed Twin'Run, an homage to legendary models R5 Turbo and Clio V6. The prototype announcing the lines of the future Twingo takes a few spicy ingredients directly from the motorsport world: tubular chassis, central V6 with 320 hp and rear wheel drive. The French developed the concept with assistance from Tork Engineering / Poclain vehicules, a company specialized in chassis for competition.

"Twin'Run embodies the mad genius Renault has been known for over the decades, to the delight of motor sports enthusiasts. No one has forgotten the R5 Turbo and the Clio V6. Twin'Run is the true heir of those racing cars that had so much appeal," said Axel Breun, Head of Concept Car Design.

On the outside of the Twin'Run, we have the reviving the spirit of its illustrious predecessor through the very dynamic profile with a powerful telescope inclined, and an unusual plunger roof line. The feeling is magnified by the additional fog lights, with LED technology and oversized spoiler. The series model will renounce only design changes specific to a show car. The lines model predicts quite accurately the outside of the new Twingo.

The concept dimensions are close to those of the current Twingo. These are typical of the small class: length of 3,680 mm, width 1,750 mm, length of 1,493 mm, while weighing less than 950 kg.

To ensure good weight distribution despite the mid-engine architecture, various components were positioned under the bonnet. These include the fuel tank, the radiator and the hydraulic system. The concept car is well balanced with a 43/57 weight distribution.

Power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a sequential SADEV boxes, with dual clutch and differential and limited slip. The performances are worthy of a hot hatch in the next class: acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.5 seconds and top speed of 250 km / h.

The V6 engine of the Renault Twin'Run Concept has a displacement of 3,498 cc and delivers 320 horsepower at 6,800 rpm. The maximum torque is 380 Nm and is attained at 4,850 rpm. The engine is mounted centrally and has a number of special elements inspired by motorsports, such as the aluminum tubing cooling and ventilation system and mounted side vents behind the doors.

"Twin'Run is a cocktail of energy, passion and athleticism, rekindling the memory of emblematic Renault racing cars," stated Laurens van den Acker, chief of design at the Renault group. "Following its twin, Twin'Z, a stylish urban concept car, Twin'Run shows that personalization is a core strategy at Renault."

Built on a revolutionary new architecture, shared with the future Smart ForFour, the future Twingo will pass for the first time from the classic configuration, with front wheel drive to the version in which the engine is located in the rear, and rear wheel drive.

Renault will assemble the future Twingo at its own factory in Novo Mesto, Slovenia, along with the next generation of the Smart ForFour. The new model will be launched in 2014, a year later than the original deadline.
