Renault Targets Porsche Cayman - The Alpine Vision Concept That Marks Legend Rebirth
|   Friday, March 04, 2016
Renault has been preparing for years the relaunch of Alpine, a model that conquered hearts and rallies with the A110 Berlinette model in the 60s.
The Berlinetta spirit was embodied in the Alpine A110-50 concept, which later took a form more earthly as the Alpine Celebration concept, which celebrated 60 years since the advent of the Alpine.

Meanwhile, the Alpine racing prototypes were able to win twice the European Championship for endurance racing in the LMP2 category and the futuristic concept Alpine Vision Gran Turismo conquered the virtual world.

The design does not aim to impress with large intakes or rims which have impressive dimensions. Everything was designed after the lines of the A110 classic, a model that brought all the Alpine glory. The front part comes with elongated headlights in style similar to those found on the Alfa Romeo 4C, backed by a set of floodlights positioned where we find the usual grid. The spoiler has a generous air intake.

The lateral side comes with a set of rims with diamond design and a plunging roof line, which hints at the back to the A110 line. The rear side is characterized by LED lights that illuminate in an X-shape, again a tribute to the ancestor. The aesthetic package is perfect in its white color, chosen especially for this moment. The Blue Alpine color is likely to be kept for the series version of the prototype exhibited now, a series version which will not differ much from what we see in the pictures.

Carlos Ghosn said the final version of the sports car will retain 80 percent of what we see today. The model ready for production is expected in the second half of this year at the Paris Motor Show. If the release date is respected, the sports car derived from the Alpine Vision would reach the market in mid-2017.

The concepts premiere was held in Col de Turini - the famous Monte Carlo Rally location. The design of the Alpine Vision concept is inspired by the famous Alpine A110 Berlinette - the same silhouette, the positioning of the optical blocks, panoramic rear window among others, but the interior is truly magnificent.
Here we have Alcantara leather, carbon fiber, while the dashboard is digital, reminiscent of the Audi TT and even the R8.

With a weight of approximately 1.100 kg, the Alpine Vision Concept accelerates to the first hundred kilometers in less than 4.5 seconds. Hence it follows that the engine would have around 300 horsepower.

The same results will be on the production model too, on which engineers will work over the next 12 months. The model will bet on the premium sports-car segment, where currently the Porsche Cayman dominates.

The French are confident in this segment, which saw 200,000 cars sold in 2015 and would grow by 50 percent by the end of this decade (2020). Therefore, the potential is there, and European markets like Germany and the UK, which amount to 60 percent of sports cars sold on the Old Continent, would be the most important targets for Alpine.
