Renault Officially Presented The V6 Turbo Engine For Future Seasons Of Formula One
|   Saturday, June 22, 2013
Renault presented in Paris the V6 turbo engine displacing 1.6 liters that F1 cars will be obliged to be fitted with, starting with the next season. The new propulsion unit replaces the existing aspirated V8 engine of 2.4 liters. The purpose of the amendment is about the attempt of the F1 managers to increase the efficiency of the cars competing in Formula 1.

Officially called Energy F1 (in line with the names already known of the street Renault engines, Energy dCi and TCe Energy).
The new Renault engine will be found under the carbon fiber body of race cars belonging to the Red Bull and Toro Rosso. The French manufacturer is trying to continue the series of victories in this season, a series which started three seasons ago together with the Austrian team. The firm has named it the Energy F1, because it is Renault's first design for this sport's new turbocharged, energy-recovery tech era.

The noise that the new turbocharged "green" engines will produce has been a heated topic while waiting for the introduction of the new rules.
Bernie Ecclestone, F1 commercial chief, has said that the 2014 engines will be too quiet for F1 and will harm the sport's spectacle. But Renault engine chief Rob White thinks otherwise.

"The sound of the engine is the sum of three principal components, exhaust, intake and mechanical noise. On fired engines, exhaust noise dominates, but the other two sources are not trivial and would be loud if the exhaust noise was suppressed and contribute to the perceived sound of the engines in the car.All three sources are still present on the V6. At the outset, there is more energy in each combustion event but there are fewer cylinders turning at lower speed and both intake and exhaust noise are attenuated by the turbo. Overall, the sound pressure level (so the perceived volume) is lower and the nature of the sound reflects the new architecture. The car will still accelerate and decelerate rapidly, with instant gearshifts. The engines remain high revving, ultra high output competition engines. Fundamentally the engine noise will still be loud. It will wake you from sleep, and circuit neighbours will still complain." he said.

"It's like asking whether you like Motorhead or AC/DC. Ultimately it is a matter of personal taste. Both in concert are still pretty loud." added Rob White, deputy managing director at Renault Sport.

Alain Prost, 4 time world champion said to Automarket: "From 2014 we will bring engines to the fore and redress the balance in F1. An engine is the heart of a car, from next year it returns to the heart of our sport."
Renault already has a deal going on to continue supplying its winning partner from Red Bull next year as well, besides helping RBR's sister team Toro Rosso, which until now utilized Ferrari's power.

On the same not, Williams is leaving Renault in favor of German-made Mercedes engines. The current Renault squad Lotus has yet to announce any units that might be planned for 2014.
