Renault Official Says Production Eolab Series Would Not Cost More Than Diesel Clio
|   Sunday, November 09, 2014
The Renault Eolab Concept, one of the surprises of the French brand for the Paris Motor Show, could become a series model someday and be sold at a price similar to that of a Clio equipped with the dCi engine, says a representative of the brand in an interview. Unfortunately for those who dream of an accessible car to consume one liter per 100 km in a combined cycle, Renault has not determined whether or not they will develop a production version of the concept.

Thierry Bollore, head of brand competitiveness, and the official who made the statement, explain the allegation that the Eolab Concept was designed from the outset to be built with lightweight materials, but also relatively cheap, such as aluminum, which is that would bring an affordable price in a potential series version without diminished performance. Bollore explained that expensive materials such as carbon fiber and its derivatives, would have been too costly for the serial version of the model at the time of purchase, and would have brought the user unintended costs in an accident, motivates the Frenchman.

"It's easy to put carbon everywhere, but if you are a customer what do you do if your carbon fiber door is broken? It's a disaster. It costs a fortune. If it's made of aluminum it's easy because everyone knows how to repair it," he said.

The good news for fans is that some innovations of the Eolab concept will find their way into production in the brand's future models. The official did not disclose what the technologies are, but the Eolab benefits from many improvements to increase performance and reduce fuel consumption. For instance, the bodywork is made from a mix of materials including aluminum, steel and light alloy composite material.

The ceiling is made of magnesium and weighs only 4 kilograms and body aerodynamic efficiency has been improved by 30 percent compared to the Clio. The future production model that will benefit from these items will not enjoy the same performance because the Eolab concept presents certain devices that are too expensive for a series model, such as variable ground clearance and active aerodynamics, all of which are essential to reduce fuel, but too expensive to be implemented on a series production car.

The Renault Eolab is powered by a petrol unit, which has a displacement of 1.0 liters and delivers 75 hp, backed by an electric motor integrated in the transmission of the 3-tier hybrid system, incorporating also a 6.7 kWh battery. Renault's low mass allows the Eolab to travel 60 kilometers in 100 percent electric mode, and fuel consumption in the NEDC cycle is estimated at one liter per 100 km. The hybrid system used is a plug-in type, so the user can charge the car from any electrical outlet.

Renault representatives indicated that the hybrid system equipping this model will be outfitting future models of the brand, without specifying when it will happen, noting that the current platform B segment of the group, CMF B, requires significant changes in order to implement plug-in hybrid powertrain systems.
Also, a series version of the Eolab concept will not benefit from reverse-opening doors.
