Renault Eolab Concept: 1 l/100 km Fuel Consumption For The Car Of the future
|   Wednesday, September 24, 2014
The Renault Eolab concept is the French brand's response to the emergence of the Volkswagen XL1 and Peugeot Hybrid Ai Concept, and will be presented at the Paris Motor Show.

The model is a gasoline - electric hybrid, emitting just 22 grams CO2 / km, and consumes one liter of fuel per 100 km in a combined scenario. The concept heralds a future B segment model that will be launched within a decade, but certain technologies and features from this exhibit could reach production earlier.

The fuel consumption of this model was reduced due to lightweight materials used for the bodywork, plus aerodynamic optimization and the hybrid technology used. The total weight of the Eolab concept is 955 kg, 20 percent less than that of the Clio equivalent. Its drag coefficient is 0.235, 30 percent lower than the current Clio IV. The French say that the series version Eolab aims to become an affordable hybrid, significantly cheaper than the current models on the market. 60 kilometers is the range in 100 percent electric mode.

Among the innovations implemented by the French we have a fixed hood that does not require a heavy opening mechanism and support, a magnesium roof weighing only 4.5 kilograms, and an ultralight windscreen. The car has active aerodynamics, including a series of integrated flaps into the front and rear bumpers, and will be presented at Paris in 2 forms, one being a design study and the other is a mobile laboratory for new Renault technologies.

100 innovations and technological improvements are present on the Eolab concept and almost all will be found on the next vehicle series from Renault.
The hybrid is equipped with an electric motor of 68 hp and a 1.0 l petrol unit SCE with three in-line cylinders rated at 75 hp. The electrical unit is integrated into the transmission housing with three speeds, the latter having a different working principle from the traditional gearboxes.

The first two steps will be used only by the electric motor, while the third level is reserved for the internal combustion engine. Automatic control unit allows the joining of the two engines' power, Renault engineers appealing to this solution because of the benefits this bring compared to a CVT, or equivalent EDC transmission. The three steps gearbox of this concept has a lower mass and a lower cost of manufacturing too.

The interior of the Renault Eolab concept has four leather seats and a "floating" center console. It has a touch screen with a diagonal of 11 inches, showing in real time the effectiveness of driving style approach. Depending on how environmentally friendly the driver wants to be, the interior lighting color will be changed. Also on the technology part, the concept gives up side mirrors in favor of video cameras that display images inside through screens located on the front pillars.

On board of the Eolab concept we have other futuristic views, like the more advanced version of the multimedia system R-Link, a sign that there are chances to see these features in future Renault production models.
