Renault Confirms The Replacement of The Espace MPV With A Crossover larger Than The Koleos
|   Saturday, June 15, 2013
One of the current dilemmas of the Renault management is replacing the venerable Espace. The model which has practically initiated the current MPV family style in the 80s, does not enjoy the success of the past. The blame for that is not only the outdated design, but also the decline of the entire segment.

The key to relaunching the segment is releasing a new full-size SUV, bigger than the Koleos, a change of direction confirmed by Laurens van den Acker, Renault's Design Director.

"The Espace is quite a respected vehicle. People were not shy to drive one and you could see it on a driveway alongside a Mercedes-Benz. But I think we have let the Espace live for too long and any car that is now 11 years ago and in today's day and age, no car would survive that long" said Laurens van den Acker for Autocar.

Renault's concept car director, Axel Breun, told Automotive News Europe that the next Espace will not feature aggressive styling like some SUVs. "The design is not as brutal as today's cars. They are becoming very military, which might be OK for the Evoque or Range Rover but it's maybe not the direction we are going," he said.

The Espace will retain functionality but at the same time it will still be a vehicle in which the driver and passengers will "enjoy traveling in, with a good view".

Right now, customers in Europe are renouncing the conventional hatchbacks and minivans in favor of crossover, being attracted by the high driving position and the robustness it inspires.

The sales of the ongoing generation Espace, launched back in 2002, are in free fall. In the first quarter of the year, Renault only sold 3,014 units in the European Union markets, which means a fall of over 35 percent compared to the same period last year.

The new Espace will be the first model built on the new common platform Renault / Nissan CFM1, which also underpins the future Laguna.
According to the head of Renault design, the design of the new full-size crossover will be showcased this fall in Frankfurt by a concept which will be close to the final version of the series. The model might borrow some features from the Scenic XMOD, a version of the compact minivan launched by the French at the Geneva Motor Show.

At the same time, the French from Renault are investing 420 million euros in a plant in Douai, France, where they will produce the Espace's successor, and the future Laguna. The two new models will share the production line with the Scenic model and its derivatives. At present, Renault produces the Espace and Laguna models in Sandouville, France. The debut of the new Espace and Laguna will take place in 2014.

The new generation of the two models will be built directly at the factory in Douai. The new Espace will also be sold on the market in China, the largest car market in the world, a place where SUVs are very popular, much like in Europe or the United States.

"The key of a true generalist brand is that we have a car for everybody. You fall in love, we have a car for you, you start a family, we have a car for you. The six cars allowed me to show the different aspects of the Renault brand" said Laurens van den Acker.
