Pushing Technological Barriers To New Heights: Audi's Matrix Laser
|   Tuesday, May 19, 2015
In the project "intelligent laser light for compact and high-resolution adaptive headlights" (iLaS), folks from Audi together with partners from industry and science are working on creating the lighting systems of the future. And so we have the high resolution Laser Matrix technology, which increases road illumination flexibility and versatility, regardless of the situation.

The Laser Matrix technology is based on the driving beam with LaserSpot introduced by Audi on the production line along with the Audi R8 LMX.
For the first time, powerful lasers can be integrated into the compact headlights, while retaining their power.

The new technology uses a fast micro-mirror that redirects the laser beam. At higher speeds the opening angle is reduced and the intensity and distance increases considerably. This feature is particularly advantageous in terms of driving on the motorway regime. In addition, the light can be distributed in a precise manner. This means that the brightness of the different illuminating areas can be adjusted by controlling the illumination times in those areas.

Another new feature is the quick activation and deactivation function of the laser diodes according to the mirror's position. In this way, the expanding or narrowing of the light beam becomes a highly dynamic and flexible process. In accordance with the current Audi Matrix LED technology, the route is heavily illuminated without dazzling other road users. The crucial difference is made by the fact that the Matrix Laser technology provides a dynamic and finer resolution, thereby enhancing driving safety according to highest level of use.

In the context of new technologies, the laser diodes which are produced by OSRAM send a blue light with a wave length of 450 nanometers to a mobile mirror that measures 3 mm. This rapid mirror redirects the blue light to a converter, where it is converted into white light, and is then projected on the road. The mirror used is produced by the Bosch company, and is actually a micro optical system, electromechanically driven on the basis of silicone. Also, it has a very high resistance that ensures a long service life. Such components are used in accelerometers and ESC control units (Electronic Stability Control).

Audi is, for many years now, a pioneer in automotive lighting technology. Among the main innovations of the brand we have the following:
2003: Audi A8 with adaptive light
2004: Audi A8 W12 with LED daytime lights
2008: Audi R8 with LED headlights
2010: Audi A8 headlights connected to the navigation data
2012 Audi R8 with dynamic signaling
2013: Audi A8 with Matrix LED headlights
2014: Audi R8, with LaserSpot for road lights
The "iLaS" project takes places over a period of three years and is sponsored heavily by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research. In this context, Audi is working closely with partners such as Bosch, OSRAM and the Lichttechnischen Institut (Institute of Lighting Technology, within the Institute for Technology from Karlsruhe). So far, results are looking quite promising.
