PSA Peugeot Citroen To Build Cars For Apple Or Google?
|   Monday, December 07, 2015
Carlos Tavares, CEO of PSA Peugeot Citroen, is open to not only partnerships with other carmakers, but also with American technology companies too, according to the Financial Times. Such agreements would be possible only with a few important conditions, says Tavares, but the future looks to be interesting in the context of giants like Google and Apple are interested in the auto industry.

Google is testing autonomous vehicles, but could not possibly produce them, and in series too, and about Apple it was written that it has hundreds of people who want to develop a car.

Carlos Tavares is a man who in the past 18 months led the recovery program for PSA Peugeot Citroen, and the first positive results have emerged. Like the famous Sergio Marchionne (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), Tavares is a supporter of consolidation in the automotive industry too, claiming that only through alliances large groups of automakers can make savings, enabling them to be efficient.

But the interesting part is that Tavares would be open to alliances with major US technology companies.
Google and Apple are interested in the automotive industry, and it is rumored they will be launching new vehicles on the market. The big question is how will they do that, and the answer is quite clear: if these vehicles are even made available, it will only be possible through a partnership with automakers, because only they have the experience and means to achieve such things.

Google is testing autonomous vehicles for several years now, and has received the right to try them out on some public roads in the US. It even has developed its own concept, however, the folks at Google have said very clearly that they will not become a carmaker. It is unclear whether these cars will be produced in series, but an interesting detail is the fact that the PSA Peugeot Citroen officials have said for a fact that in 2020 they will launch autonomous vehicles.

About the car of those from Apple, there were several rumors and it is said that a team of several hundred people are working on a concept, and the company found highly guarded locations where ultra-secret tests is made.

Most news sources show that Apple would be in trouble because it has no experience in the auto industry, so it will not be able to launch the car in the timeframe originally proposed (5 years). Also, Apple has not officially confirmed that it was even working on a car.

However, if there will be an alliance between PSA Peugeot Citroen and a technological giant, this will not happen anytime soon. Much more likely would be an alliance between PSA Peugeot Citroen and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, in the context that Sergio Marchionne, head of the Italian-American group, is looking anxiously at an expanded alliance with a giant carmaker, after being rejected by General Motors.

Analysts quoted by the Financial Times said that an alliance between PSA and FCA would be logical, especially since both companies have a global dimension and could complement their presence on various markets (for example, PSA would have access to the US market).
