PSA Peugeot Citroen Could Delay Hybrid Air Production Model
|   Friday, February 20, 2015
The Hybrid Air System from PSA Peugeot-Citroen will not be inserted into production as quickly as promised by its inventors, according to the British from Autocar. The problem is not necessarily related to the time required to develop, but to reducing the development team due to cost cuts and the departure of the department head responsible for the deal from French company three months ago.

Sources in the corporation state that the departure of Karim Mokaddem, project leader, was planned from the beginning when the first phase of the project was concluded.
Moreover, the same source states that there is no plan to cancel the project of introducing a production model equipped with the Hybrid Air system, although it is unclear whether this will happen in 2016 or not.

The French from PSA announced in autumn last year the interest of finding a partner to share their new technology, which they claims can reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption of a car with up to 40 percent in an urban regime. This will be possible without the use of batteries and electric motors with a high weight and high prices to match. Those at PSA need a volume of 500,000 units per year equipped with their hybrid system so that it is profitable from an economic point of view and the French group is not sure it can achieve these volumes alone. Unfortunately, there is no rumor announcing any possible partnership.

The problem imposed by the new Hybrid Air system for series production is related to the special components it requires. Those parts and elements must be manufactured by suppliers who do not usually work with automobile manufacturers and requires a large volume to ensure a good price and a steady production for the components that will provide the success of the project. Among the necessary components we have hydraulic motors and special a transmission and gas reservoirs to withstand a pressure of 300 bars.

Because of all these elements, which prove to be very expensive, people from PSA are seeking partners to share the costs of research and development of the Hybrid Air system.

"Car companies are like big ships. It takes time for them to change course as much as they could have to. Hybrid Air is ready for development, but it needs a big investment and we are not ready to make it on our own"said Gilles Le Borgne, Executive Vice President Research and Development for PSA Peugeot Citroen.

"The outstanding reduction in CO2 emissions is the fruit of PSA Peugeot Citroen's advanced gasoline and diesel engine technologies but also of its ongoing research to make lighter, more aerodynamic cars. The Group continues to invest heavily in research and innovation, particularly in the field of plug-in hybrid technologies and new-generation electric vehicles" he added.

The British from Autocar have already tested a prototype Peugeot 2008 fitted with this system, while Peugeot offered a model 208 equipped with this new tech at the Paris Motor Show in 2014.
