Preview Of The 2013 Audi R8

Early next year, showrooms will be proud to host the new Audi R8 supercar. Audi has revealed a number of images and details concerning it, and we are happy to share.

A highly interesting feature will be the addition of a new 7 speed Stronic dual-clutch transmission that will be ready across the entire range. Those of you who hated the previous R tronic automated manual fitted on the previous model will no doubt do the victory dance to that piece of info.
But a conventional 6 speed manual will still be up for ordering on some models. In addition to the new transmission system, another novelty comes in the form of the R8 V10 plus model.

Design wise, in the front of all the new R8 models we can gaze on a revised headlight design, with the daytime running lights sitting in the center, and a slightly different overall shape. The grille stays very similar to the one on the current model, just like the side air dams and splitter, although these too are new additions. Optionally, Audi can install a front splitter made of carbon fiber, which comes as standard on the R8 V10 plus, however.

LED headlights are standard on every R8 model. The individual diodes for high and low beams have been placed over and below daytime running lights, which are especially marked to serve as indicators. Furthermore, static turning lights have been integrated into the headlights. In the rear, LED lighting is also present, along with a twin exhaust system with a glossy finish. The R8 V10 plus will get the pipes in a black finish.

Engine wise, we still have the traditional V8 displacing 4.2 liters and developing 430 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. If we take that engine and match it with the 7 speed transmission, we will only need 4.3 seconds to go from o to 60 mph, on our way to the top speed of 186 mph.

The Spyder version sees 4.5 seconds needed to go over 60 on its way to 186 mph. The 5.2 liter V10 offers 525 horses and 390 lb-ft of torque that translate into 3.8 seconds until 60 mph and a top speed of 195 mph. That happens when the 7 speed dual clutch transmission is equipped. The V10 Spyder has corresponding number of 3.8 seconds and 192 mph.

As already mentioned the new top dog is the R8 V10 plus. Standing at 550 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque, this beast is able to breach the 60 mph barrier in just 3.5 seconds and has a top speed limit of 197 mph. This model will be easily recognizable thanks to the abundance of darkened elements.

The R8 coupe will be the lightest of the pack. It will weigh in at around 3439 lbs, will have a manual gearbox, and a drag coefficient of 0.35 or 0.36 depending on engine as well as body shape. Light alloy wheels, carbon fiber sports seats and carbon ceramic brakes are some of the goodies found on that model.

As the car draws closer to the launch date, prices will be made ready, but you can bet they will not be cheap.
