Preview Of Land Rover\'s 2013 LR2

An updated version of the LR2 is inbound; coincidently, a completely redesigned Range Rover flagship is also in the books. Now, the smaller LR2 will get to see some new goodies, like a better engine, renewed bodywork as well as a more appealing interior due to upping the luxury level. These changes were needed, if the company didn't want this model to fall behind in the Land Rover lineup, a lineup which has an increasingly growing appetite for the premium segment, or at least that is what every model overhaul told the world.

Now, the most interesting aspect is the introduction of Jaguar Land Rover group's latest turbocharged 2 liter 4 cylinder engine, finally replacing the old, fuel hungry, 3.2 liter 6 cylinder unit. In spite of the higher cylinder count, the new engine is better in every department. Max output is expected to be around 240 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque; not much of an improvement over the 230 horses and 234 lb-ft the straight-six unit had, but an improvement nonetheless.

Supposedly the fuel economy indicators will top the previous version, which was by the way rated at 15/22 mpg, and the best thing about that supposition is that reality so far has proven that 4 cylinders are better than 6 in fuel needs; pretty soon they will be better in almost all needs. A chief role in that is played by weight, and engine weight goes there as well. The new unit is 88 pounds lighter and will no doubt contribute to fuel economy ratings, as well as handling. Supposedly, the 2013 LR2 will need 8.2 seconds to reach the 60 mph limit on the way to a top speed of 124 mph.

Adding to that is the fact that this model comes equipped with Land Rover's Intelligent Power System Management (IPSM) which comes with Smart Regenerative Charging. This system works by having the alternator charge the battery only when the vehicle is decelerating, thus recovering kinetic energy from deceleration, as opposed to consuming energy during engine operation.

Now, the engine is coupled to the wheels via a 6 speed automatic transmission, thus powering the Haldex AWD system. This appreciated setup relies on a hydraulically operated multi-plate wet clutch that continuously varies the torque sent to the front and rear axles as needed. That means that while driving normally in conditions, such as a paved road, most of the torque is delivered to the front wheels.

Fitted in the vehicle is Land Rover's Terrain Response system, which is a very useful tool when off-roading because the system can automatically adapt the engine, gearbox, center coupling plus chassis systems to match with the terrain the car is on. The system works alongside a secondary Hill Descent Control feature, which helps drivers while taking on steep inclines by automatically restricting the car's speed on downhill runs.

The interior gets a nice premium touch, many inspired by the Range Rover Evoque, and that can only be good news.

The 2013 Land Rover LR2 will arrive by this year's end and will start off from 37,250 dollars.
