Preview Of Audi's 2013 SQ5 TDI
|   Tuesday, June 19, 2012
First of all, let's shatter some hopes: the car will not arriving in left side of the Atlantic as you look at the map; only Europeans will enjoy its presence. Sorry to break it to you.

Otherwise, we can compliment Audi for cutting the suspense short. Rumors of this car, or of a performance diesel version of the Audi Q5 only began circulating a few days ago, and now the German automaker drops the bomb: there will be performance diesel version of the Audi Q5 and it shall be called the SQ5.
This comes somewhat as a surprise, as barely 2 months have passed since the RS Q3 debuted; not that we are complaining, or anything.

As the naming suggests the SQ5 is based on the recently updated Q5 and is powered by a 3 liter V6 diesel engine. The same twin-turbo unit can be found in the A6 Avant. Now, the engine is capable of delivering very satisfying performances. At 4500 rpm we have 313 horsepower and starting from 1450 to 2800 rpm we get 479 lb-ft of torque. Because the torque indicator is so high, the traditional 7 speed dual-clutch transmission has been replaced with an 8 speed torque-converter automatic gearbox.

Official estimates by Audi point to a 5.1 seconds delay between oomph and 62 mph, while top speed is capped at 155 mph. If those figures haven't impressed you yet, know that this SUV will return 33 miles per gallon on an European cycle. We all know how accurate that cycle is, but still the rating is impressive. And if we consider the Avant has the same poweretrain, and it respects what it promised, the SQ5 has every chance of making good on its promises too.

As customary, Quattro all-wheel drive comes as a standard feature, along with torque vectoring, the system that enhances agility. The SQ5 is also equipped with a sport suspension and rests on 20 inches of aluminum wheels wrapped in 255/45 tires; this combination can also be found on lesser Q5 models, however, the optional 21-inch wheels are available only on the SQ5.

Visually, there is little to set apart a Q5 equipped with the S package and the SQ5. In a way, this is a good thing, as it forces the ignorant masses to put their heads to work. The body panels are the same, with the grille, side mirrors, rear bumper and exhaust pipes being modified. The first element gets a new design with glossy double blades, the side mirror caps get an aluminum look, and we get quad exhaust pipes.

Also, on the inside we get black interior trim, power-adjust sport seats, brushed aluminum inlays, leather upholstery, S-badged instruments with gray dials and white needles, pedals and shift paddles with aluminum looks, as well as S-branded treatments of the door sills, steering wheel, start button, and welcome screen. A wide range of materials and colors are available, and features can be personalized to satisfy everyone.
The first quarter of 2013 will see the car in showrooms, at an opening price of 58,500 Euros (about 62,000 dollars).
