Practicality Test of the Mercedes Benz GL 63 AMG
|   Tuesday, February 05, 2013
The introduction of the GL 63 AMG to the AMG club drove people into believing that AMG had lost its mind. However, after test running the vehicle, experts believe that AMG has done a recommendable job of turning this SUV into an ultimate sports wagon. Just like AMG's first car – the Red Sow – the GL 63 AMG features improper torque production. This is a true monster and considering its size, the power does seem useful.

The GL 63 is a demure vehicle and to turn it into a performance machine, AMG had to complete revamp the engine.
The GL 63 AMG uses a V8, 5.5 liter engine mated to an all wheel drive system and an adjustable, sporty transmission system. Standard 21 inch sports rims have been included with advanced disc brakes, hidden behind the alloyed rim.

Minor exterior modifications have also been done such as the face lifting the rear and front fascia as well as introducing new fender flares. The GL 63 AMG feels like any other GL 63 with an added fury. The AMG division has done a commendable job enhancing the GL 63 and the constant engine rumbling reminds the occupants of the lurking 550 BHP under the hood, ready to fire up any moment.

With the pedal pushed to the floor, the engine jumps from 0 – 60 MPH in just 4.8 seconds and the occupants are temporarily forced to forget about the 5812 pounds of body weight the GL 63 AMG has. The seven speed automatic transmission system takes the driving experience to a whole new level and the GL 63 AMG is truly a driver's car.

The seating arrangement and steering system is quite comfortable and the interior has not been uplifted much excluding some minor details such as a new dash board design. The interior looks fabulous in itself and the instrument panel is quite simple while displaying most of the important mechanical aspects of the car. The steering system makes the driver forget the weight of the vehicle as it is quite simple and smooth compared to the weight.

Body roll is minimal and the new anti roll cage does its job of instilling a new sense of safety into the heart and mind of the occupants. The advanced disk brakes bring the car to rest from 70 MPH in just 162 feet and that is a commendable fact considering the torque generation, momentum generation and weight of the GL 63 AMG.

Although the major problem that Mercedes Benz is facing at the moment is sales. Although the GL 63 AMG provides just the right balance between performance, size and comfort, it does not have a target market as of yet. People who look forward to sports cars will not purchase the GL 63 AMG despite the fact that it provides decent performance. People looking forward to SUVs will not fancy the GL 63 AMG as it is too sports oriented. Therefore this vehicle is finding it difficult to stay in the market considering the times.
