Porsche Reportedly Working on V4 Engine Layout for 2014 Hybrid LMP1
|   Friday, February 07, 2014
Porsche has confirmed using a radical V4 engine layout in its upcoming hybrid drive train, which is set to make a formal debut at Silverstone this year. The petrol engine used in Porsche's next generation 919 Hybrid LMP1 Le Mans Challenger is powered by a single turbo charger, placed between the two banks. We are looking at a 2.0 liter direct fuel injected, sixteen valve engine, placed in an unusual V layout.

We are yet to be officially informed of engine displacements and other technical features, even though reports suggest that the turbo charged used by Porsche is not electric powered, such as Audi's.
V4 is not a popular engine layout on sports as well as production models, due to various unique problems plaguing it. Smooth running is not achieved owing to engine position and this as a result makes this engine layout unusable in all modern designs.

Porsche however is known to perform engineering miracles. Hence, their decision to try out the new V4 engine block has roused mixed emotions. Porsche is known to opt for unorthodox packing methods, which could help them place the engine block correctly. Optimum positioning of the battery system, also helps the 919 Hybrid perform in an optimum manner. We are not sure about Porsche's motives while working with this engine layout, although simplicity could play an important role.

Torque generating ability is intense, while fuel efficiency is high. This short block engine layout has power generation capacity equaling various larger engines, while being light weight and practical at the same time. Porsche is likely to use balancer shafts, to smoothen out engine vibrations from this unstable V4 engine.

They have confirmed using four cylinders and two recuperating systems in their latest design, which allows the battery to draw charge that can be used later. We are looking at a front wheel drive vehicle on electric power, although additional information is currently unavailable. The petrol engine is said to power its rear wheels. We will get back to you with additional details as Porsche makes a formal announcement.

The engine recuperating systems are known as ERS and KERS, which have specific functions. While KERS is in charge of recovering kinetic energy while braking, from front axles, ERS is in charge of working together with the turbo charger. Porsche has installed its Hybrid technology, according to engineering standards used by Audi, although it is different from what Toyota has in mind. Porsche considers regenerative braking as insufficient for charging the batteries. Hence, this system differs.

Porsche's 919 Hybrid LMP1 Le Mans Racer will make an official debut at the 2014 Le Mans at Silverstone, although it faces stiff competition this year from vehicles from Ford, Lancia and other global car makers. Ford's latest engine lineup is currently being used to power Saab. Hence, expect this season to be quite entertaining and action packed. Come back soon as we bring you latest news and reports of Silverstone, when all the action starts from 20th April 2014.
