Porsche Fills 918 Spyder Order List And Confirms Its Successor
|   Wednesday, December 17, 2014
The Porsche 918 Spyder supercar which replaced the Carrera GT is no longer available for purchase. Despite the purchase price of 770,000 euros (on the German market), all 918 copies of this model are reserved for customers.

The 918 Spyder model was the most popular in the US market, where it was chosen by 297 customers. In second place were the markets in Germany and China, where Porsche sold approximately 100 units in each of the two countries.
The remaining units were distributed in other markets where German brand is present.

The demand for 918 Spyder was so high that Porsche has opened a separate list of orders, in the case where one of the 918 customer changes his mind before the car was manufactured or delivered. This happens because the production of the 918 Spyder has another year until it is completed, so there is a window of time during which customers might change their minds for some reason.

"I was always convinced we'd sell out, and what is most satisfying is that the sales have accelerated as reviews confirmed the car is everything we promised it would be. We set out to take a different approach to our rivals, to build a car that was at the extremes of performance and efficiency, and we proved that we could achieve both. Our customers now know that we are ready for whatever the future holds" said head of research and development, Wolfgang Hatz at the LA auto show.

Wolfgang Hatz also said that the 918 Spyder was a product which was made with the brand's new generation of engineers and that the model is an investment in the future; it was also a process in which him and his colleagues have learned a lot. Hatz promised that Porsche will launch a successor to the 918 Spyder, but it will not start immediately after delivery of all units, but we won't have tio wait a long time either.

Even if the 918 Spyder is not a high volume model, the technology which equips this model will reach many more cars than those 918 units. Thus, Porsche will gradually implement elements developed specifically for this model in future products of the range.

"Will we build a successor to the 918? Yes, Not immediately, but not in 20 years' time either. When you build such a car you learn so much, and this business moves so fast that there are always new challenges to meet. When you develop such cars you also develop a generation of engineers, and I'm confident that all they have learnt will feed back into the company for many years. We want to keep that momentum, so for sure there will be a successor to the 918 at some point" he said.

The Porsche 918 Spyder is the flagship of the German manufacturer and debuted at the same with the Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1. Among the three hypercars the Porsche 918 Spyder had the biggest share of production, the other two models being produced in just 499 units, respectively 375 copies. Both had full order lists, but for Ferrari this happened right after after the official presentation, while the P1 took several months after the launch of the model.
