Porsche Could Make A Coupe Version Of The Cayenne
|   Monday, May 12, 2014
The Porsche Cayenne could get a five-door coupe version in 2018, according to the British from Autocar. That version will be promoted as a sporting proposition in the Cayenne range and is already in an advanced stage, say sources within the Porsche brand, cited by the newspaper in the United Kingdom.

The future Cayenne coupe will be based on the MLB platform of the Volkswagen Group which will be shared with six other SUVs of the conglomerate from Wolfsburg.
Until then, the launch of the third generation of the Cayenne, scheduled for 2017, is eagerly expected. The Cayenne coupe version has not yet received approval for production from the the German brand's Board.

If the Cayenne coupe will be approved for production, Porsche's factory in Leipzig will require investment to increase production. The need for investments appears amid the good sales of the Cayenne model, which occupies a large part of the production capacity of the plant in question.

The coupe version of the German SUV would bring, in turn, impressive volumes since it is prepared to fight its way on a growing segment. This fight will be brutal, as this segment is also disputed by Mercedes-Benz, Range Rover and BMW.

Expanding the range of the SUV is an issue under discussion within Porsche's decision-making people, because the Germans are afraid that the exclusivity of the brand could be in danger if they released several models in this category. At the time of first SUV's onset bearing the Porsche name, the Cayenne, those who wanted to preserve the traditional brand and stood against the existence of SUV criticized the decision greatly. But, against these criticisms, it quickly became the best selling model in the range. Now, the Cayenne has a younger brother called Macan, and stand on the verge of receiving a five-door coupe version whose name has not been set yet.

The Cayenne Coupe will be positioned as a more sporting alternative, versus the regular Cayenne. Porsche inside sources have confirmed that they will receive a range of petrol and diesel engines with a plug-in diesel-electric and petrol-electric hybrid powertrain.

"We have been considering launching a more sporting derivative of the Cayenne for some time now. The problem has been the production capacity at our Leipzig factory and the strong sales of the regular Cayenne" said a senior Porsche official.

The style of the future coupe will be a step forward compared to that observed today on the second generation Cayenne. For the second generation, a facelift is imminent before the third generation model coming in 2017. It is expected that the new Cayenne coupe will adopt an edgier look with tauter surfaces, and an overall style inspired by the 918 Spyder. A sleeker roofline, narrow glasshouse, and sloping rear end will help to differentiate it from the regular Cayenne SUV.
The new version Cayenne Coupe will probably be priced 15 to 20 percent higher than the current Cayenne.
