Porsche Boss Considers Electrical Cars
|   Sunday, March 30, 2014
Porsche does not exclude the development of a series of electric vehicle, says Matthias Müller, CEO of the German company.
In an interview with the Germans from Auto Motor und Sport, Muller says that electric vehicles are more interesting than hybrids or electric vehicles with extended range, but that their autonomy is the biggest problem.

To be practical, an electric vehicle must offer a range of no less than 300 kilometers, explains Muller.
#8232;More than that, a range of 400 kilometers would be indicated, added the head of the German brand.

Porsche introduced in 2011 three electric prototypes based on the Boxster, called the Boxster E.
While one of them had two electric motors, which provide a total of 245 hp, the other two had a 122 hp electric motor, which provides a range of up to 170 kilometers on a single charge.

Meanwhile, the 245 hp version, offering similar performances with those of the respective generation Boxster S version providing a top speed of 274 km / h and acceleration from 0 to 96 km / h, in a time of 5.0 seconds.

The three prototypes were used as "mobile laboratories" to test electric engines, and many other systems that could be introduced in a series vehicle, alongside with the Porsche electric vehicles.

In an opposing train of thoughts, Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini CEO, believes that the key to increasing performances in the coming years is closely related to the current powertrain improvements and the reduction of vehicle weight. Winkelmann is against hybrids and electric vehicles, and does not take any of them into account, unlike the Porsche CEO.

Ferrari's boss, Luca di Montezemolo, believes that electric vehicles do not belong in the range of the manufacturer from Maranello. More than that, Montezemolo explained that Ferrari will never build a smaller car, or a cheaper one, and the electric vehicles are also excluded.

Going back to Porsche, at the Auto Show in Shanghai, the brand is marking the world premiere of the 2014 Panamera. This will also be the place where the new Panamera S E-Hybrid, the first plug-in hybrid offered by the German automaker, will be seen.

"The Porsche Panamera and China – that is a very special success story. Exactly four years ago, we introduced the first Panamera to a world audience here in Shanghai – and very intentionally here. Because it was clear to us that our Gran Turismo would be precisely the right model for this future market. And we were not mistaken. In 2012, one out of three Panamera cars were delivered to China" stated Matthias Müller.

The new Panamera S Hybrid E enhances the concept offered by the Panamera S Hybrid, with the powerful electric motor and a battery of higher performance. This battery has more power and can be recharged at home or at public vehicle charging stations.

Electricity is stored in a newly developed lithium-ion battery that has a capacity of 9.4 kWh. The capacity compared to the previous model battery (1.7 kWh) is vastly higher. The battery can be charged in 2 and a half hours when plugged into a 240V power source.
