Porsche 919 Hybrid - The German Brand And The 24 Hours Of Le Mans
|   Wednesday, March 12, 2014
Porsche presented at the Geneva Motor Show a racing car that will participate in the 2014 season of the World Endurance Championship in the LMP1 class prototypes, where victory is aimed, especially in the famous 24-hour race at Le Mans.

The new prototype was baptized Porsche 919 Hybrid to highlight the two energy recovery systems that accompany the traditional gasoline engine, a successful recipe that has been adopted by rivals from Audi and Toyota.

The propulsion unit consists of a V4 engine turbocharged with direct injection displacing 2 liters, capable of reaching 9000 revolutions per minute, to which electric motor in added plus a battery pack made with Li-Ion technology.

The electric motor is made to turn in a system made for recovering energy released at the time of braking, and another system that recovers energy from the heat of the exhaust system.

The two systems are similar in principle to those used in Formula 1 this season known as MGU-K (Motor Generator Unit - Kinetic) and MGU-H (Motor Generator Unit - Heat.

The electric motor that uses electricity from the two recovery systems offer front-wheel drive, so the Porsche 919 Hybrid is able to have temporary all-wheel drive.

The Porsche 919 Hybrid is highlighted by the color palette chosen by the German manufacturer. This is mostly gray, and the number 919 is placed prominently on the front side and along the sides, with a white font on a red background.

In addition, the new color palette includes the slogan "Porsche Intelligent Performance" as the first letters of each word are visible when the car is viewed from above.

The German officials say the new Porsche 919 Hybrid is the most complex race car that they have developed throughout history.

Porsche recently announced the team drivers that will take part in the 2014 season of the World Endurance Championship.

Thus, one of the cars will be piloted alternatively by Mark Webber (former Formula 1 pilot at the World champions Red Bull Racing), Brendon Hartley (Australian who for 24 years was a member of the Red Bull Junior program) and Neel Jani (Swiss, aged30 years).

Meanwhile, at the steering wheel of the second car will be three pilots with significantly greater experience in such competitions: the Germans Timo Bernhard and Marc Lieb, but, and the Frenchman Romain Dumas.

Porsche is the most successful manufacturer in the 24 Hours of Le Mans: the Germans have won 16 times in the most famous endurance race in the world, including seven consecutive wins in the 1981-1987 period.

The last success dates back to 1998. Porsche is followed in that ranking by Audi, which won 12 wins, starting from the year 2000.

Porsche will become this year the third manufacturer participating in the LMP1 class of the World Endurance Championship. The main rivals are competitors from Audi, who have won seven of the last eight editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and will tackle the season with three cars, including the Audi R18 e-tron quattro.

Meanwhile, the Japanese from Toyota will be present at the start with two Toyota TS040 Hybrid models.
