Porsche 911 Turbo S and Formula 4 race car goes head to head
|   Thursday, August 07, 2014
Porsche 911 Turbo S is a road car and Formula 4 is a track focused race car. The one thing that they have in common is speed. They are extremely different in all other aspects, and yet there is a chance of comparison between these two, based on speed and power, obviously.

Porsche 911 Turbo S has 552 bhp of horsepower and 516 lb ft of torque to its disposal. It is by far the fastest road car, and it has set records in other aspects as well. It is priced at over 14k GBP, surpassing most road cars in this aspect as well.

Formula 4, on the other hand, is a one seater non luxurious racing car. It was built for the tracks, and it can traverse any racing circuit in the world in times comparable to Porsche 911 Turbo S. It is also available t prices much lower than that of its competitor in this context.

Formula 4 has a power output of 185 bhp coming from a Ford Duratec engine. The engine has a capacity of 2 liters, and suddenly your interest seems to be disappearing. How can such a puny car compete with something as massive as Porsche 911 Turbo S?

It comes with space frame chassis. It also has a part carbon fiber safety cell. So that means it is super lightweight compared to the super heavy weight Porsche 911 Turbo S. that is why it can reach speeds comparable to this other car in question.

Braking also seems to be comparable on both these cars. coming to transmission, Porsche 911 Turbo S can shift gears quite quickly with its automatic transmission and Formula 4 has a paddle shift Sadev six speed transmission, so it quite smooth as well. So are these cars comparable on racing circuits, or does 911 Turbo S has an unfair advantage.

F4 is more favored to do well in corners and 911 on straight roads. However, 911 have better traction and far better acceleration compared to F4. So it is quite neck to neck when it comes to a head on competition, yet it feels like 911 are going to cruise away some time down the line.

Another important aspect is to have experienced drivers behind the drivers' seat. Unequal drivers' would give an added edge to a particular car. That is precisely what happened when these two were put head to head at West Circuit. And then 911 found no traceable competition at all.

However, if there is a bit of warming up done on the F4, it does surprisingly well. The more speed you put into it, the more it becomes easier to drive. It not only overcomes a slight problem with traction on turns, but with advanced braking it does commendably well on straight roads as well.

Now a bit of statistics for everyone, at the start of this head on Porsche 911 Turbo S did a lap in 1 min and 19.2 seconds, quite commendable. After an hour, F4 did the same in 1min 13 seconds flat.
