Plans to remove the Land Rover Defender; put on hold
|   Saturday, May 25, 2013
Land Rover has been trying to draft plans to build a new model of the Defender on Indian soils along the sides of a SUV from Tata in all probability. But off late, after several speculations and considerations the plans have been chucked for some unrevealed reasons.

Despite the fact that a new model of the Defender is under construction to hit the markets as a replacement, Land Rover's bran d director John Edwards exclaims that contrasting to the initial fact that the new Defender would come out of the assembly line and hit the markets by 2015, it would not be happening as originally envisaged.

On the other hand rare possibility of meeting some future legislation has been cited as the reason as to which the present model of Defender in the market would be exhausted by the year 2015.

A thought process has been lingering round the corner which seems to give an impression that the plans being prepared to be drafted for the new Defender that would hit the assembly lines three years later is primarily and significantly centred on creating a product that would be graded in the premium level range.

It also gives the impression of flaunting the JLR's new PLA architecture comprising of all aluminium in its build. The aluminium body shop of Land Rover is built to bring out an output of 95,000 cars every year on a schedule of three shifts.

It is to be noticed that there is space available presently for subsequent expansion of the quarter to increase the output from a 95000 to a staggering 180,00 units which is a fraction less than double the initial amount it used to bring out earlier. Presently there are sources suggesting that works on the lines of improving the space and station capacity has begun to accommodate larger business in terms of the body shops of JLR.
There are expectations of rolling out more than two pairs of cars which are based on the mentioned PLA platform. It seems very much likely that a new premium version of the Defender will, in all probability be, a sister concern to the Discovery models of the next generation.

Both the models mentioned above are supposed to be based on the marginally smaller and relatively new version of PLA architecture. For its new venture in Saudi Arabia, Land Rover needs to be able to get aluminium at a fairly if not highly competitive price, which the sources suggest Land Rover is pretty confident about.

The above reason alongside premium pricing would mean that it would be fairly cost-competitive to build the car in the United Kingdom. The division of Tata on automotive lines has caused Land Rover to prompt its plans about unleashing the Defender with changes. With the drawbacks suffered by Tata in its projects of Nano and Aria and with the freefall of new car sales in India, A planned co=operation with the likes of Land Rover and jaguar to bring out a Defender doesn't seem practically and financially viable.
