Pitching the Ferrari LaFerrari against Its Two Major Rivals - The McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder
|   Saturday, May 10, 2014
With Ferrari finally launching their much awaited LaFerrari, competition in the supercar market has just tripled, with the likes of McLaren's P1 and Porsche 918 already in class. If you have the buck, these supercars can be yours. Super fast, expensive and really rare, these vehicles have been designed exclusively to cater to society's wealthiest, with McLaren is manufacturing just 375 units of their P1, Porsche has confirmed manufacturing 918 units of its 918 Spyder, while Ferrari is happy selling a measly 499 units.

If you are able to drive all three of them on road, you should consider yourself truly lucky. We have taken an extensive drive test of all three and are hence well aware of their positive and negative sides. The only thing common to these monsters is high performance and equally loud engine note.

All three are quite different in terms of drive feel. While the LaFerrari feel at ease within 5,000 – 9,250 RPM, the P1 drives comfortably within 4,000 – 8,500 RPM. The P1 however has greater torque than any of its competitors and feels swifter in straights. The 918 Spyder delivers linear performance, staying true to its Porsche brand name. Despite McLaren having a smaller engine than both its rivals, performance levels are almost similar, which highlights their engineering prowess, once again.

McLaren's P1 is the only vehicle in class that is offering a turbo charged engine, while its competitors have opted for larger naturally aspirated ones. All three are based on hybrid power trains, which enhance power delivery and performance, along with better fuel efficiency and environment friendliness. Porsche's 918 Spyder is based on an all wheel drive train, with minor under steer at parts. This needs immediate attention, considering stiff market conditions.

The way Porsche delivers power to its axles deserves special credit, as it has gone a long way in ensuring high performance. What these vehicles prove however, is that super cars can do everything they are meant to, in a refined manner, even by being eco friendly. Who would have thought of driving a Ferrari in ‘eco mode', a decade back!

A vehicle capable of high acceleration needs to stop quickly too and there is no beating Ferrari when it comes to braking potential. Porsche feels heavier than it actually is due to four wheel drive. It is however 250 kg / 200 kg heavier than LaFerrari and P1 respectively. A high performance vehicle need to sound great too and Ferrari is currently leading out charts in this department.

Their 6.4 liter naturally aspirated V8 engine makes the best noise among the three, followed by the P1's 3.8 liter V8. Their engine notes are quite unique and equally pleasant to the ear. P1 features the best body balance, with lesser amounts of roll, followed by LaFerrari and 918 Spyder. We hope to bring these vehicles together someday and pitch them against each other in their natural habitat – a race track! Till then, stay with us for more news, updates and drive test reviews.
