Peugeot Will Introduce The Revolutionary Hybrid Air Propulsion System
|   Monday, November 11, 2013
The French from Peugeot could enter into series production the Hybrid Air technology, a revolutionary hybrid system that gives up electricity services in favor of compressed air as an alternative source of propulsion.

Offered in tandem with a classic small capacity engine, Hybrid Air considerably reduce the amount of harmful substances; a small class car like Peugeot 208 and Citroen C3 can emits just 69 g CO2 / km. And consumption would drop dramatically.
Initial estimates indicate an average of only 2 l / 100 km.

The novelty of the system developed by PSA is that it engages a conventional gasoline to an epicyclic gear, assisted by a hydraulic motor powered by a compressed air tank hidden in car seats, on the median tunnel. Assisted by the pump, the hydraulic motor has the task of periodically recharging the compressed air tank, using the energy recovered during braking.

The entire assembly weighs no more than 100 kilograms, 50 percent less than a classic hybrid system based on electricity. Hybrid Air is at the same time, a cheap solution (without rare metals like lithium), easy to implement even on low-cost models for emerging markets, a huge advantage that opens new horizons of growth for the French in places like China, India or Eastern Europe.

Thus equipped, any vehicle can run in three different modes, as desired or necessary: only on the basis of the compressed air, only by conventional fuel and, of course, using both solutions in tandem.

Using only compressed air is available, but only for lower speeds, meaning below 50 km / h. As you can see, the Hybrid Air system is dedicated primarily for small cars, like B or C class, which spend most time in large urban traffic. Moreover, PSA also confirmed its intention to engage Hybrid Air system in small displacement engines with power between 82 and 110 hp. Most likely, the next generation VTi engines with three and four cylinders, which will gradually be introduced on all low class and compact models from Peugeot and Citroen ranges, will be ones who will see this tech.

The project leader Karim Makaddem said forAutocar: "Creating the technology is not the hardest part. We have spent two years on the project, and believe we have found the solutions at an affordable price. But before we invest in production, we must prove that enough customers will buy it. Our market research must be rigorous - this is a very new product."

Makaddem said that present research suggests this technology attracts mostly to young car buyers with a lot less preconceptions about powertrain technology.
"We are asking people to reconsider what they know and the way they drive a little," he said. "Of course this means the new generation is more open minded."
Peugeot and Citroen are focusing hard on major Chinese cities, where pollution is a major problem and car sales are exploding. The new system will have a great impact in those areas.

"To invest in the manufacturing process we need to be sure the customers are open-minded, and it is clear China offers good opportunities," Makaddem stated.
