Peugeot RCZ To Get New Generation In 2016
|   Thursday, July 10, 2014
The coupe model Peugeot RCZ, launched by the Sochaux brand in 2009, will have a successor, reports the Dutch from Telegraaf, citing the head of the French brand.

The RCZ's future was uncertain given that it was based on a 308 generation platform, replaced last year, and it belonged to a niche model and the models in this class were on the PSA Peugeot-Citroen list of products which would not receive replacements.

Fortunately for the fans of the attractive coupe the company executives will launch a new model in a few years, the nearest term is 2016.
The future RCZ will receive the EMP2 modular platform of the current 308, which will bring extra maneuverability, better fuel consumption and lower weight.

The platform will reduce weight by a pretty large margin of around 100 - 150 kg. Also, it will have the technology level, comfort and security, that are specific for the 308 second generation.

The management of Peugeot decided that the RCZ is an important model for the company, as it brings an important image capital although it involves high costs in some dedicated bodywork and interior.

Fortunately, the volumes expected from the EMP2 technical platform and powertrain developed for this save the situation for the second RCZ generation, according to preliminary information about the redesigned model in the fall of 2012.

Keeping the RCZ's in the product range is logical, given the change in orientation of Peugeot's intentions towards the premium segments, in which they operate, while Citroen will target customers who want vehicles with low maintenance costs. Regardless of the orientation, both brands must obtain important sale volumes in the coming years to ensure survival.

PSA Peugeot-Citroen announced a new strategic plan, dubbed "Back in the Race", soon after Dongfeng and the French government each invested 800 million euro (1.16 billion dollars) into the group. The strategy was envisioned by Carlos Tavares, the new CEO of the French concern, and is designed to return the company to profit.

The Peugeot RCZ was one of the models that was a little on the expensive side, when Carlos Tavares announced the plans for PSA to cut the major models count, especially for Peugeot, from 45 to 26 models by 2020.

As you know, the RCZ is a 2 +2 coupe (it rivals models like the Volkswagen Scirocco and Audi TT) and was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show back in 2009, started marketing in 2010 and produced at the Magna Steyr facility in Austria. It is unknown if the next-generation model will keep this arrangement.

The path dictated by Tavares involves the removal from across the range of unprofitable models. This can happen either because of the high cost of development, or because of poor sales as well as trying to streamline the entire network of the Peugeot and Citroen brands through elimination of internal losses.
The French group will be geared towards markets outside Europe to cut down dependence on the Old Continent.
