Peugeot Developed Hybrid Air Technology Set to Feature on the 2013 2008 SUV
|   Sunday, February 24, 2013
Peugeot plans on launching the first generation of the PSA Hybrid Air technology at the Geneva Motor Show. The idea was conceived back in 2008 and with the introduction of the new technology, Peugeot plans on reducing the CO2 emission and improving the fuel efficiency of the vehicles in the future. The CO2 figures aimed for are 116 g/km of CO2 by 2015.

Hybrid Air Technology consists of conventional petrol powered internal combustion unit, connected to an epicyclical automatic gear box assisted by a hydraulic power train and engine operated by compressed air.
The transmission box and the engine are put inside the engine bay of the vehicle and the compression tank is put just beneath the setup to reduce the distance compressed air has to travel in order to boost the motor.

The setup is done parallel to the exhaust system and the tank is refilled with the regenerative energy harnessed during controlled braking. The latest vehicle to feature this technology has been the newly launched Peugeot 2008 SUV. The transmission and general power train measure of the vehicle has been heavily modified to feature the new setup and the hydraulic motor is a very useful addition to the entire setup. The compressed air powers the engine when the petrol tank is not required.

As the air leaves the tank, a corresponding amount of oil is transferred, which in turn moves the hydraulic motor. The 2008 can run on petrol alone but not just on hydraulic power. The hydraulic motor however enhances the performance of the vehicle and this is a great addition that will be used in most Peugeot production models in the future.

Peugeot has claimed that the PSA Hybrid Air Technology is capable of enhancing fuel efficiency by over 45 percent. Both the Peugeot A and B Segment vehicles will feature this new technology and the CO2 emission of the B Segment vehicles are expected to fall below the 69 g/km mark. The PSA Group is currently using their technology to develop a car returning 140 MPG. This may seem to be impossible at the moment but the team is confident that this is an achievable target.

The basic idea behind the Hybrid Air technology is allowing the vehicle to run on air through the hydraulic support. Peugeot could also install the Hybrid Air Technology for the next generation C3 although no confirmation has been given so far. The 2008 SUV is slated for a Geneva Motor Show release and Peugeot is set to showcase the technology in details at the event.

Peugeot had first thought about using Hybrid Air technology back in 2008 when the idea of alternate fuel technology was mushrooming in the automotive world. After five years, their technology is finally beginning to take shape and this is a big turning point in the automotive sector at the moment. With the big firms such as BMW, Mercedes Benz, Audi etc researching alternate fuel cell technology, Peugeot could have an upper hand if the tests render positive results.
