Peugeot 508 Could Be Replaced By Two Other Models
|   Wednesday, July 02, 2014
The customers in Europe, large amateurs of station wagons, have not been forgotten, says Peugeot. As a consequence, the Peugeot engineers have also prepared bodywork versions that will replace the 508 in a few years.

The French D segment model Peugeot 508, which has just received a restyling, could be replaced by two separate models that are already in progress. The news comes from Maxime Picat, Peugeot boss, who discussed this with the British from Autocar and gave information about the brand's future in the middle class segment.

At present two different bodywork styles are considered for the 508's successor: one that is more dynamic and one that is more spacious.
Depending on how the car market will evolve, and the conclusions that follow from studies which are currently underway, Peugeot is going to follow the example of Mercedes-Benz, which offers E-Class models and the CLS using the same technical platform, but with two different bodies, helping to attract more customers who are not always in the same demographical category.

The Peugeot 607 was the former flagship of the Sochaux brand before being replaced by the 508 model, which ought to attract more 607 and 407 customers.
The Peugeot 508's replacement version optimized for comfort could be designed with the Chinese market in mind, considering that space and comfort are key requirements for a sedan sold in that country. Meanwhile, the sports version of the 508's replacement could be inspired by the Exalt concept, also from Peugeot, and would present a strongly angled windscreen and more bold lines.

Because the Peugeot and Citroen brands are not active on the United States market, the second largest car market in the world, the French brands are forced to turn to the Old Continent and emerging markets to increase sales.

Both brands will undergo serious restructuring, aimed at eliminating models that address the same segment with the same features, as well as models with weak sales. In addition, the French concern is working with all its forces to reduce losses in its internal network, another essential element for a return to profitability.
Peugeot CEO Maxime Picat told Autocar that the company was seriously considering offering a four-door coupe model alongside a more conventional sedan when the current 508 is phased out around 2017.

"We are considering two body styles: one more dynamic, one more spacious and comfortable. But we are seeing how the market goes" he said.
Because of the success enjoyed on the Chinese market by other big brands with their cars, especially the larger models, Peugeot is being forced to examine its big car plans and see which way they will be going.

Picat declared for Autocar back at the Beijing motor show in April that he wanted the next Peugeot 3008 generation to "look more SUV-like". That statement came amid concerns that the current crossover design of the ongoing model was having a negative effect on Asian buyers.
