Panasonic Remains The Preferred Battery Supplier For Tesla
|   Wednesday, November 06, 2013
Tesla, the American company that has experienced one of the most fulminating ascensions in the automotive in recent years, announced the signing of a new cooperation agreement with the Japanese giant Panasonic.

The Japanese will maintain the role of main supplier of batteries used by electric Tesla models. Currently, Panasonic produces only the batteries present in the Model S sedan. The new agreement, covers a period of four years, and aims to provide more than two million latest generation lithium-ion batteries, dedicated for the current Model S, and the future crossover Model X.

But Tesla will not give up complete independence from Panasonic, the American backup solution chosen being the batteries produced by Koreans from Samsung, which will receive the status of secondary supplier.

"This expanded agreement with Panasonic is important to Tesla as we continue to increase the pace of production," stated Tesla Co-Founder and CEO Elon Musk. "We look forward to strengthening our relationship with Panasonic, and I'm confident that this partnership will continue to be an integral part of Tesla's success for years to come."

Tesla claims the total number of miles driven by Model S and Roadster exceeds 130 million and that "together, Panasonic and Tesla have developed a next-generation battery cell technology that provides the highest energy density and best performance cells in the market."

"We are extremely proud to be a strategic partner of Tesla," Yoshihiko Yamada, president of the Automotive & Industrial Systems Company, said. "Panasonic will increase its production capacity of lithium-ion battery cells to supply Tesla's growing needs as it expands its production of EVs."
