Opel Promises Best Diesel Engines
|   Sunday, April 05, 2015
Currently, Opel already has the most modern diesel engines portfolio of all time. With the launch of the new 2.0 CDTI units in the first half of 2015 a new generation of quieter diesel engines in three displacement classes for models, ranging from Corsa to Insignia will be available.

These units, with the small displacement being 1.3 liters, 1.6 liters medium displacement, and large displacement of 2 liters, were developed based on a common philosophy:
- Improve efficiency and reduce all types of emissions;
- Improved response and torque at low speeds;
- Dramatic reduction in noise and vibration in order to improve comfort.

The new 1.3 CDTI was recently launched with the new Corsa, which already boasts over 120,000 orders. This engine is available in power ranges of 55 kW / 75 hp and 70 kW / 95 hp, both generating a maximum torque of 190 Nm. It was developed to be much quieter than its predecessor and to ensure more rapid reactions.

The latest generation turbochargers provide driving and uniform acceleration at low speeds, with a minimal level of noise. Both versions come standard with Start / Stop technology to reduce fuel consumption. The most economical Corsa diesel variant with 70 kW / 95 hp, automatic transmission Easytronic 3.0, and braking energy system recovery can reduce CO2 emissions by 82 g / km and fuel consumption up to 3.1 liters per 100 km in mixed case. Thus, it has obtained A + energy label in Germany (under Regulation [EC] no. 715/2007).

The new generation 1.6 liter diesel engine with four-cylinder all-aluminum structure is the star of the compact class. Acclaimed by the specialized press as "silent diesel engine", it made its debut on the Zafira Tourer at the end of 2013, with an output of 100 kW / 136 hp. A version of 88 kW / 120 hp quickly has followed.
The 1.6 CDTI is now available for the Meriva (70 kW / 95 hp, 81 kW / 110 hp and 100 kW / 136 hp), Astra (81 kW / 110 hp and 100 kW / 136 hp) and sporty Astra GTC (100 kW / 136 hp). The new 1.6 CDTI turbo diesel engine is considered the quietest and most efficient engine in its class.

The refined 2.0 CDTI, a leader in the new Opel diesel engine range was launched recently. The new four-cylinder unit offers an impressive torque of 400 Nm and maximum power of 125 kW / 170 hp is reached at an engine speed of 3,750 rpm only. This propels the Insignia from 0 to 100 km / h in just nine seconds and provides a top speed of 225 km / h. This spring, the new 2.0 CDTI will be available on the Zafira Tourer (125 kW / 170 hp) and subsequently with other Opel models such as the Cascada convertible car.

The great weakness of diesel engine of nitrogen oxides emissions belongs to the past. The Insignia is equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) BlueInjection Opel, which removes nitrogen oxides in the exhaust of the engine. Very small quantities of AdBlue, a harmless additive, consisting of urea and water, is injected into the exhaust gas flow upstream of the SCR catalytic converter and downstream of the diesel particulate filter (DPF). The solution is immediately converted into ammonia (NH 3), which will be absorbed by the SCR catalyst. Nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gases are then converted selectively by a chemical reaction with ammonia into harmless nitrogen and water vapor.
