Opel launches two new engine modifications for the Astra GTC
|   Monday, August 27, 2012
Opel has made the new Astra GTC available in the South African market and the buyers have the choice between a 1.4 liter and a 1.6 liter turbocharged petrol engine option. The Astra has been redesigned and sports new technology and designing features that differentiate it from its predecessor.

The cars are powered by a small but highly powerful engine and firing up the engine is a turbocharger which is electronically controlled and an advanced engine control unit or ECU.
The cars are Euro V compliant and produce 103 KW power. The engine channels the power to the rear wheels via a six speed manual transmission.

The powerful 1.4 liter and 1.6 liter engine on the Astra GTC produce 103 KW @ 4,900 RPM. Torque produced is 200 NM @ 1,800 – 4,900 RPM. The wide range of torque figures allows the car high power output at all gears and low emission level with superb fuel efficiency.

Engineers from Opel tested this vehicle for fuel consumption and Co2 emission and it was found that the car consumed 5.9 l/100 km and emission level was 139 g/km. The car reaches 100 km/h in about 9.9 seconds and the Astra GTC is a fun to drive vehicle with a top speed of 201 km/h.

The Astra GTC is packed with features and one of the advanced features in this vehicle is Opel's start / stop technology which automatically kills the engine when the car is static for some time. The engine is brought back to life as soon as the vehicle senses a gear shift. This saves up on a lot of fuel and reduces unwanted emission.

The engine features a four valve per cylinder system and variable valve timing makes sure that maximum output is extracted from the engine in every situation. This also helps the vehicle max output in superior load conditions.

Fuel efficiency is also maintained with the help of a meter indicating the accurate mixture of fuel in air to favor combustion. The engine control unit also maintains an optimum temperature for the engine to perform and this helps increase performance while maintaining constant fuel efficiency.
The six speed manual transmission system has the best gear ratios and hence the car has swift acceleration. The 1.6 liter turbo charged Astra GTC induces a sporty character and high performance in the car and the car produces 132 KW @ 5,500 RPM, torque figures close to 230 NM @ 2,200 – 5,400 RPM.

The car accelerates from 0 – 100 km/h in less than 8.3 seconds and has a top speed of 220 km/h. Fuel consumption is close to 6.9 l/100 km and the turbocharger kicks in at medium torque to produce extra power.
Just like its younger sibling, the 1.6 liter Astra GTC also uses four valves per cylinder and variable valve timing for exhaust and inlet systems. The engine of this car is also connected to a six speed manual transmission and hence maximum power is developed by the engine. The cars are set to hit the market in a big way.
